Only One Young Man

Only one young manwas murdered on March 27, 2015, in the State of Delaware at 11:20 pm. One very special young man, and he was my oldest son. He was 44 years old, and he lost his life when a gunman put twelve bullets in his head and upper torso, while he was sitting in his car, unarmed and unaware he was going to die.

His name was Richard L Jacobs Jr. and he was my son, and my very best friend in the whole world.

Only One 64 Year Old Mother

Richard only had one mother, and he was her very best friend. One mother that sought justice, and went out on the streets of Delaware and hung flyers asking for information on who murdered her son.

Only One Homicide Detective

Only one homicide detective who told Richard's mother, the State of Delaware was broke. Richard's mother would ask the detective why couldn't you do this? Why couldn't you do that? His response was that cost money, the State of Delaware is broke. She replied than I could get you some money, you have to have money to do your job, don't you? His reply was this, "No that won't work, others have tried and failed, however, he was wrong, Very very wrong indeed!!

Only One Letter

Richard's mother, my wife, did not listen to the detective. In fact she wrote a letter to the Federal State Senators office of the State of Delaware, asking for a grant to fight violent crime.

She got a response back from Senators Carpers office, who was a Senator for the State of Delaware back in 2015. The letter said, although Senator Carpers office handled things on a Federal level, a represenative at the Senators office Tom McPherson, contacted the liaison at the Governors office, and they made the Governor personally aware of the murder of "Richard L Jacobs Jr", and his family's tragedy as a result of a voilent crime. He said the Governor was made aware of our request, for a grant for violent crime.

This was one time the planets were aligned in our favor.

Only One Request For A Grant To Fight Violent Crime

Yes, the planets were aligned in our favor, and later in 2015, I read on the computer, that a large grant was given to the Delaware State Police, and a smaller grant was given to the Dover City Police to fight "violent crime".

Richard lived in the City of Dover when he died, for he lived with us, after his wife died of liver failure. However, he was brually murdered in Magnolia Delaware.

Only One Person Can Leave A Legacy

When people ask me about Richard's murder, and what my wife and I did to seek justice, I simply tell them this." I hope Ricky would be proud of us, I certainly was proud of him."

A policeman in a neighboring town, just down the highway from us, is now the "Chief of Police" in that town. He told me that all police departments, now get a grant to fight violent crime. They did not prior to 2015 but they still do to this day.

A Legacy For Richard L Jacobs Jr. - Fit For A Prince

Richard always helped people during his 44 years of life. Think about how many people he is helping since his death, by those grants to fight violent crime.

However, we still miss him terribly, and we would give our own life any day and anytime to have him back on this earth, just for one more day.

There is two search pages on google yet today, that tell the story of the "Murder of Richard L Jacobs Jr".

This story "Only One" was published by my wife, Susan Payton on Medium on September 7, 2024.

Oh Gregory. I’m so sorry. I can’t even begin to express how horrific it must have been to lose your son like in such a violent way. What a legacy you and your wife have created though - I’m sure your son would have been proud. Wishing you both all the best and I’m sorry for your loss.
