CHAPTER FOURTEEN
They slide into the window of the third floor of the building barely missing the bullets. They landed in a small square room where two of Lazar’s men were standing. Jason grunted as he got up. The extra weight had drained all his strength but he managed to keep it together. Jane, on the other hand, looked as if jumping out of a four-storied building was her favorite hobby.
“Where are the wheels?” Jason asked.
“Downstairs, basement,” replied the two men and went away.
“What wheels?” Jane asked.
Jane had been present while they were discussing the plan and when it came to the topic of escape, Jason had just said, “The crash bang way”, and Lazar smiled. What it was Jane, had no clue.
“You will see,” Jason replied. With that they stalked towards the elevator.
*
In the lobby, Alfred’s men arranged themselves in front of the elevator. They had seen its lights lighting up, indicating that someone from the third floor is coming. This had to be the fugitives and they arranged themselves in such a manner that as soon as the elevator doors opened, the fugitives would be shot into pieces. When the doors slide open, they started firing but stopped just as quickly as they started because inside the
elevator was only a chair!
“Check the damn stairs!” shouted their leader.
In the stairs, they found two ropes dangling from the third floor. The enraged leader shouted, “Send a team to every single floor.”
*
In the basement, Jane asked, “A building that has an elevator and a basement, in the middle of a slum?”
“Well, this must have been an old office of some sort until it went bankrupt or something,” came Jason’s reply.
“Oh….so …. Where are the so called ‘wheels’?” before Jason could reply, she exclaimed, “OH MY GOD!”
In front of them was a slick black car, perfectly designed as if to meet a point beyond perfection.
Jason said, “Yup! Just what I wanted for Christmas, the M490. Bullet proof glass, top sped 350 mph and sick finish.”
Jane said, “Your buddy must be a damn quadrillionaire to get this.”
Jason only smiled at that but it faded when he heard voices. He put Alfred in the backseat and took up the driver’s seat while Jane got in the passenger’s seat.
“Buckle up,” Jason said, “This is gonna get rough.”
Jason started up the car, gunned the gas pedal and shot out of the basement with bullets bouncing harmlessly of the bulletproof glass. Jane was shouting and laughing while people all over the street were gaping and shooting in vain at the car.
They rode through the streets without much trouble until three other cars joined them. Men in those cars were trying to shoot at the wheel of the car apparently realizing that the car was bulletproof. Jason knew they wouldn’t be lucky for long.
“Hold on,” he shouted.
“What do you think I have been doing?” Jane shouted back.
He slammed the breaks and twisted the steering wheel. The car shot backward during which two of the cars passed by smoothly on their left and right after that the car turned backwards to the left missing the last car by inches.
‘Good’, Jason thought, ‘now at least they were in front of him. He gunned the gas pedal and gave Jane a gun and said, “Shoot!” He hit the car directly in front of him on the left bumper and it went airborne, flipping backwards over Jason and Jane. The other two turned but not until Jane shot one of them on the wheel and it fell over to its side.
Jason cut into an alley and emerged onto another road.
“Only one more left,” he whispered. They were now past the two inner circles and were heading towards the final one.
Suddenly the entire ground floor of a building on their left exploded and a huge…….neither Jason nor Jane knew what the huge thing was. It was like a half truck and half tank. Both of them cursed. Jason veered to the right with the huge vehicle pursuing them. It was approaching really fast for its immense structure but not as fast as the M490. It mercilessly rode over its own accomplice car which was the only thing in between them. The bullets shot from a mini gun attached to the vehicle was so powerful and strong that it started to spread cracks over the bulletproof exterior.
Soon they were fast approaching the outer circle. It was sort of a wall, completely covered with barbed wires and with guards holding all sorts of weapons. The backside glass of the car soon fell off due to the fierce bullets and then would have killed Alfred, if he weren’t in a sleeping position.
Jason had lost all hopes of survival. He knew it was impossible for the car to make it through that barricade. Suddenly an idea struck him.
“Hold on again!” Jason said.
“Actually I had never let go,” came Jane’s reply.
He smiled and drove faster and the men at the barricade started firing. When they were just meters away from it, Jason twisted the wheel and drifted left while on the other hand, the huge vehicle tried to do the same but ended up falling on its side and crashing on to the barricade and then exploded.
Jason took advantage of the opening and drove through, heading towards Lazar’s slum.
