Man Broke Into Home, Intent on Killing Woman, But He Left in a Body Bag
Despite being injured from blows from a claw hammer, Susan fought off her attacker
On the evening of September 6, 2006, ER nurse Susan Kuhnhausen returned to her Portland, OR, home to find a note from her husband. “Sue, haven’t been sleeping. Had to get away-Went to the beach.” Her intuition told her something was off. When she walked into her bedroom, 59-year-old Edward Haffney jumped out of a closet and started beating her in the head with a claw hammer.
She quickly realized Haffney was there to kill her.
The two wrestled for control of the weapon. Although injured, the 51-year-old Susan wrestled the makeshift weapon from his hands.
She wrestled him on his stomach, climbed on top of him, and, still unsure who the fuck he thought he was hitting in the head with a hammer, returned a few blows to his head. Edward smirked, uttering only two words, “You’re strong.”
Haffney fucked around and found out just how strong. Susan pleaded with the man to tell her who sent him; she told him she would call an ambulance if he told her. Unexpectedly, Haffney grabbed the hammer from Susan’s hands. Without hesitation, she grabbed him by the neck and squeezed with all her strength. He turned purple; she let go and tried to run.

Haffney jumped up and caught her in the hallway. He began punching her in the face. She bit him, pulled him to the floor, and continued biting, hoping she could at least leave behind her DNA if he killed her.
She managed to knock Haffney to the ground, climb on top of him, and, using her left arm, put him in a chokehold. He fought without luck. He stopped moving. She grabbed the hammer and ran to a neighbor's to call 9-1-1.
After a 14-minute struggle that seemed to last for hours, it was over. Edward came to kill Susan, but instead, he lost his own life.
Susan was not charged with a crime. As it turned out, her husband, Mike, hired Ed Haffney to kill her. He promised Mike a hefty payout of $50,000. With Susan dead, he would inherit her house, sell it, and live happily ever after. Thank goodness his wife did not intend to be a victim that day. Mike pleaded guilty to charges and received a 10-year prison sentence. Susan testified against him. She told Mike at court
"If at any point in our marriage I thought you needed to die, I would have had the balls to kill you myself.".
Karma worked her magic. Three months before Mike's scheduled prison release date, he died of cancer.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this story. Susan is a badass, do you agree?
