Brandon Corton never took the stand. But the families of the victims he killed voiced what they wanted to say.

“Brandon…it pains me to know that you killed my son. He was going to be a lawyer and defend people who can’t defend themselves. He had his lunch box as a briefcase and clip on tie as a kid. He’d go around cross-examining stuffed animals. His whole life was wrapped up in the law. You stole that from him. There is no way to bring him back and no way for me to forgive you.”

Sawson Hawkins’ father stepped away from the lectern.

Gentry Swope’s mother stepped to the lectern. She balled up a piece of tissue in her left hand. She had prepared a statement.

“I speak on behalf of my family and Gentry’s friends. He was shot down like a dog in the street. He didn’t deserve this death. I’m not asking for the jury to decide anything but the death penalty in this case. You took my son’s life and your life should be extinguished by the state. It is just and it is right that you should die. You took the lives of these young men including my Gentry. There are no words that can fully express my grief and discomfort. I will, however, sense some semblance of vindication once your corpse is hauled out of the execution chamber. You are rotten and nothing good can be said of you. If I believed in God, I wouldn’t even ask Him to have mercy on your soul. Just die.” She was accompanied by her other son and her nephew who helped her walk back to her seat. The next person to voice their thoughts about Brandon Claxton was the sister of Phoenix Demar, Rivera. She was about to finish college herself. She stepped to the lectern.

“I don’t know how long you knew my brother, but I remember him telling me that he had just met a cool guy named Brandon. I felt relieved because throughout most of his life, he was always studying and didn’t have time for friends. So when I learned that he was going to join a frat house, I got excited. I just knew that he wouldn’t be hazed or anything like that. ZAP was a good house. I knew a boyfriend who attended that house. I thought he would be safe there. Maybe meet a sorority sister. I had such high hopes for him. Naturally, as a big sister, I wanted to ensure he was going to be treated well. I often would meet up with him in the quad and just ask him how things were going. He said he was happy. His grades were up and he was going to parties. His life was going well. When I heard the news, I cracked like an egg shell. I couldn’t believe the words the police officer was saying to me. I was just crushed. There isn’t a shadow of a doubt that you committed these atrocities.” Rivera then went off script. “A father and a mother of your victims came up here and wished death on you. Well, I do, too. You took away our loved ones and didn’t have a second thought about what you were doing. Like Miss Wayerson, I don’t believe it, but if I did, I’d hope you burn in hell.”

Kim witnessed all of this and processed it in her mind. She did her best to not stand up and cheer all three of the families for gathering the courage to stand up. The court adjourned for the day. The next day in court would be the ruling by the jury.
