It was like Kim walked the planks. Not off a ship but on stage in front of a captive audience. During her lecture series she continued with another grisly murder.

“When he used the hammer, he made it particularly more gruesome because it was intended to drive into the skin with the claw. What I need you folks to do is write ten pages on how the hammer even came into his possession. Marco Delerini is still doing prison time in Delaware State Prison. After he murdered his wife, the children all had their names changed and shipped to different corners of the country. There were six kids. So, some of them may have stayed in the tri-state area as well. Keep that in mind. Okay. Class dismissed.”

She closed her lesson plan. Nadine Beck came up to Kim as the students filed out of the lecture hall.

“Professor Jergensen.”

“Yes, Nadine.”

“I was wondering if I could be assigned another case.”

“Why is that?”

“That was my dad.”

Kim’s face flushed.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“Delerini. He’s my dad.”

“I’m sorry, I mean I didn’t know….” Kim admitted.

“No, it’s okay. I just was wondering if I could cover another case,” Nadine said.

“No, of course. You can do the Ally McBride case.”

“Thank you.”

“No, thank you for telling me. I had no idea.”

“I still think it was a big of you to investigate your own case. You see, that's one of the reasons I took this course. I wanted to confront my demons and know what my dad did. But I just can’t stomach the idea of actually researching it and covering it over again.”

“I understand,” Kim replied in a low tone. “You have the opportunity to do the McBride case if that will suit you.”

“It does. Thanks, again professor.”

“Absolutely.”

Kim looked at the empty lecture hall. She just thought. She wondered about the other students who had ties to the cases and how she would adjust her lesson plan to be more accommodating to people associated so closely with the cases.

She drove her Goulding home and turned on the news not expecting to see her face. She was still selling well and her media coverage had dwindled slightly.

“Tonight we have news that the infamous, famous, I don’t know what to call her, Kim Jergensen is back in the spotlight.”

Kim’s heart rate quickened. She looked at her phone. It blew up with messages.

She read them while the TV was on pause.

“Are you watching this?” “What are you doing to those students?” “You’re out of control!”

She unpaused the TV.

“Miss Jergensen is forcing her students to relive personal connections to murder cases in her classroom. A young woman whom we will not reveal her identity, has come forward to show that the disgraced detective is making her complete assignments related to their families.”

Kim scoffed. She shook her head and laughed lightly. “This isn’t happening.” Her phone rang. She was so out of it that she didn’t even see the caller ID.

“If you’re one of these so-called reporters trying to harass me, I’ll—-”

“You’ll what? Call the cops?” Yawquisha giggled. Kim sighed deeply.

“I’m sorry. I just—”

“You just were about to come with me on an adventure.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m taking a trip down to Bethany Beach. I wanted you to come with me. We could even drag the hims.”

Kim smirked. “And you’re not going to turn me over to the media outlets?”

“I promise.”

“Okay.”

“I know the left and the right are jumping all over this. You shouldn’t be worried. When both sides agree on one thing, you know it’s either untrue or a disaster.”
