Iran Strikes Back: Tehran Launches Major Retaliatory Assault on Israel Following Airstrike on Nuclear Sites

Operation “True Promise 3” marks the most direct and deadly confrontation between Iran and Israel, escalating fears of a wider Middle Eastern war

Strike in Tel Aviv

In a sharp escalation of Middle Eastern tensions, Iran launched a massive retaliatory strike against Israel late on June 13, 2025, following Israel’s recent bombing campaign that targeted key Iranian nuclear and military facilities. The Iranian counter-offensive, dubbed "Operation True Promise 3", involved the launch of over 150 ballistic missiles and more than 100 drones, many of which targeted densely populated areas and strategic military sites in central Israel.

This latest exchange between two of the most powerful adversaries in the Middle East marks the most direct confrontation in recent history and has raised alarms across global capitals. While both nations have engaged in covert and proxy warfare for decades, this confrontation is a major escalation in their long-standing hostilities.

Background: The Trigger Point

Tensions between Iran and Israel reached a boiling point following Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, a series of targeted airstrikes conducted earlier in June 2025. The Israeli Air Force struck multiple Iranian sites, including a major hit on the Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, which caused widespread damage and disrupted uranium enrichment activities. These attacks were viewed by Tehran as an unprovoked act of war, despite Israel's claims of preemptive self-defense against Iran’s growing nuclear ambitions.

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed that the “Zionist regime would pay a heavy price.” Just days later, Iran initiated its most extensive direct military action against Israel to date.

The Retaliation: Iran’s Show of Force

On the night of June 13–14, 2025, Iranian forces launched Operation True Promise 3, targeting Israeli airbases, missile batteries, and central infrastructure around Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Be'er Sheva. According to military analysts, the scale and coordination of the attack marked a significant evolution in Iran’s strategic capabilities.

While Israel’s Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow missile defense systems were able to intercept a large number of incoming threats, several missiles managed to break through, causing casualties and material damage.

Key outcomes of the strike:

Casualties: At least two Israeli civilians were killed and 22 others injured, some critically.

Infrastructure Damage: Parts of Tel Aviv experienced blackouts, and minor structural damage was reported at several government buildings.

Psychological Impact: Air raid sirens and panic gripped cities, sending thousands into bomb shelters overnight.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described the attack as “a grave escalation and a declaration of open war.”

Israel’s Response & Regional Implications

Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the security cabinet and issued a statement vowing a “forceful and decisive” response. Israel scrambled jets and put additional air and ground forces on alert. However, as of the latest reports, Israel has not launched a full-scale retaliatory strike — perhaps due to intense pressure from international stakeholders urging de-escalation.

Meanwhile, the United States and European Union have expressed grave concerns over the escalation. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the situation "extremely dangerous" and urged both parties to "step back from the brink." NATO and the United Nations also released statements urging restraint.

The Regional Domino Effect

The confrontation is having ripple effects across the Middle East. Iran's regional allies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and militia groups in Iraq and Syria, have reportedly moved into higher alert. In Gaza, Hamas issued a statement praising Iran’s actions, although they have not joined in the fighting yet.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both adversaries of Iran but recent partners with Israel under the Abraham Accords, have urged calm but warned that any spillover into the Gulf could destabilize oil markets and security arrangements in the region.

Legal and Ethical Dimensions

From a legal perspective, Israel’s original strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, which are often dual-use in civilian and military terms, has raised questions regarding compliance with international law, particularly the UN Charter’s Article 2(4), which prohibits the use of force unless in self-defense or with Security Council authorization.

Iran, on the other hand, is claiming its response as legitimate self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows nations to respond proportionately when under attack. However, targeting civilian-populated areas, such as in Tel Aviv, may complicate Iran’s legal defense.

What Comes Next?

Experts warn that this confrontation could spiral into a broader regional war if immediate de-escalation efforts fail. Both nations possess advanced military technology, deep intelligence networks, and powerful allies. A full-blown war between Israel and Iran would not only disrupt global oil markets but also potentially draw in the U.S., Russia, and other major powers.

Despite calls for calm, military convoys were seen moving in both Israel and western Iran as of June 14. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the situation escalates further or whether international diplomacy can put out the flames before they engulf the region.
