Auto Shankar was a well-known gangster who became famous in the 1980s in the Indian city of Chennai, which used to be called Madras. Shankar was born into a poor family in the rural district of Villupuram in Tamil Nadu, India. Shankar moved to Chennai in his early twenties in search of a better life and started working as an auto-rickshaw driver there.
Shankar began engaging in illegal activities like smuggling, bootlegging, and operating a brothel over time. He owned a number of auto-rickshaws, which he used to transport his illegal goods and kidnap young women from Chennai's streets. These girls would be sold to brothel owners all over the country by Shankar, who would force them into prostitution. He rose to prominence in the criminal underworld of Chennai thanks to his ruthless methods and connections to politicians and corrupt police officers.
The authorities were aware of Shankar's rise to power and fame. He was detained multiple times, but due to his relationships with influential people, he was always released on bail. However, his demise was brought about in 1988 when the Chennai police were finally able to crack down on his activities.
During the course of the investigation, the police uncovered evidence that connected Shankar to the slayings of a number of young girls. Six counts of murder, kidnapping, and rape were brought against him. Every aspect of Shankar's trial was covered by the media, making it one of the most sensational trials in Indian history.
Shankar denied being involved in the murders during the trial, but several witnesses testified against him. Kandasamy, Shankar's former associate, turned against him after being arrested by the police, making him one of the most important witnesses. Kandasamy affirmed that Shankar was answerable for the homicides and had taken steps to kill him assuming he at any point uncovered reality.
Shankar was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to death by hanging, despite his assertions of innocence. The Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India upheld the verdict. On April 27, 1995, Shankar was put to death in Chennai Central Prison.
The story of Auto Shankar is one of struggle for justice, crime, and corruption. The demise of Shankar's criminal empire, which was founded on exploitation, violence, and fear, demonstrated that even the most powerful criminals can be caught and punished. Because of Shankar's connections to politicians and police officers, the system's deep corruption was exposed, making it difficult for authorities to bring him to justice.
The issue of human trafficking and forced prostitution, which is still a serious problem in India, was also brought to light by Shankar's case. Notwithstanding endeavors by the public authority and NGOs, a huge number of ladies and youngsters are still casualties of illegal exploitation consistently, with a considerable lot of them winding up in the sex exchange.
In conclusion, Auto Shankar's story is a warning about the dangers of corruption and criminality. Although Shankar's criminal empire was formidable, the efforts of law enforcement and the justice system ultimately brought it down. However, the repercussions of his crimes and the exploitation of young girls continue to haunt India to this day, urging us to remain vigilant and fight these atrocities.
