A Romantic Evening That Turned Fatal

On December 3, 2003, in Bangalore, Karnataka, 27-year-old Girish and 21-year-old Shubha had recently gotten engaged. Just three days after their engagement, Shubha invited Girish out for dinner. Unaware of what fate had in store, Girish picked her up on his bike, and the couple enjoyed a meal together before heading home.

During their ride back, Shubha expressed her fascination with watching flights land. Obliging her request, Girish took her to an airways spot in Koramangala City. At around 9:30 p.m., as the couple admired the aircraft descending into the airport, two unknown individuals approached them. Without warning, one of the strangers struck Girish on the head with an iron rod. He collapsed instantly, bleeding and unconscious.

A Cry for Help Goes Unanswered

As Girish lay bleeding, Shubha screamed for help. Terrified, she tried to stop passing vehicles, but none offered assistance—perhaps fearing a robbery or foul play, as such incidents were not uncommon in the area. After several desperate pleas, an elderly couple stopped to help. They rushed Girish to a nearby hospital, where his parents, devastated by the shocking news, arrived immediately. The police were soon involved, launching an investigation that would eventually unravel one of Karnataka’s most sensational crime cases.

The Investigation Takes an Unusual Turn

At first, the police suspected a robbery gone wrong. However, their perspective changed dramatically when Girish succumbed to his injuries the next morning. With no CCTV footage available in 2003, the case seemed to be heading toward a dead end. But Officer Nanaiah, leading the investigation, had an unconventional approach.

He asked to review footage from Girish and Shubha’s recent engagement ceremony. Upon watching the video, he made an intriguing observation—while everyone else appeared joyful, one person stood apart: Shubha. Her lack of enthusiasm and distant body language raised suspicions.

The Call That Changed Everything

Diving deeper into the investigation, Officer Nanaiah checked Shubha’s phone records. He discovered that on the night of the attack, she had made 73 calls to one specific number. Further analysis revealed that the number belonged to a 19-year-old law student named Arun Varma. When questioned, Arun denied any knowledge of Girish and claimed he was out of town on the night of the crime.

However, Officer Nanaiah had already set up a trap. As soon as Arun left the police station, he urgently called someone, confessing his fear about the interrogation. What neither Arun nor the person on the other end knew was that the police were tracing the call. The recipient? None other than Shubha.

A Chilling Confession

With mounting evidence against them, Arun and Shubha were cornered. Under pressure, Arun finally broke down and confessed. The revelation was horrifying—Shubha was the mastermind behind the murder. She had never wanted to marry Girish. She was in love with Arun, but her father disapproved of their relationship due to Arun being two years younger than her.

Shubha believed that the only way to escape the marriage was to eliminate Girish. She devised a plan, enlisting Arun’s cousin Dinesh, who introduced them to a local gangster, Venkatesh. The hit was planned meticulously, and after two failed attempts, they finally executed their deadly scheme on December 3.

The Evidence That Sealed Their Fate

With Arun’s confession, more pieces of the puzzle started falling into place. A beautician, who had done Shubha’s makeup on her engagement day, recalled that Shubha had made a chilling statement: “I will never marry a simple man like Girish. If I have to, I would rather kill him.”

Additionally, an elderly couple, who had helped take Girish to the hospital, provided another damning detail. They noted that while Shubha had put on a dramatic display of grief, she had refused to sit beside Girish in the car, choosing instead to sit in the front seat.

With phone records, call logs, and testimonies, the police had all the proof they needed. The murder weapon was also recovered, further cementing their guilt. On January 25, 2004—47 days after the crime—Shubha, Arun, Dinesh, and Venkatesh were all arrested.

Justice Served… Or Was It?

For the first time in Karnataka’s history, call detail records were presented as primary evidence in court. The accused were charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 201 (destruction of evidence). However, despite overwhelming proof, the case dragged on for six years.

In 2010, all four were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹50,000 each. But the twists didn’t end there. In 2014, Shubha appealed to the Supreme Court and was released on bail. Shocking footage later emerged of her walking freely, without an ounce of remorse, as if she had achieved something significant.

A Lesson in Justice and Betrayal

This case remains one of the most chilling and unforgettable crime stories in Bangalore’s history. Shubha, a law student, could have easily chosen a different path—walking away from the engagement, communicating with her family, or seeking legal means to end the marriage. Instead, she orchestrated a brutal murder, believing she could outsmart the law. But she hadn’t anticipated a sharp and determined officer like Nanaiah, whose relentless pursuit of justice ensured that the truth prevailed.
