Florida Inmates Have a Baby Without Meeting in Person: Love Finds a Way (Through the Vents)

Florida Inmates Use Air Vents and Ingenuity to Conceive a Baby Behind Bars

By Cindy🎀Published about a year ago • Updated about a year ago • 2 min read

In what can only be described as a *modern prison love story* (or a plot twist out of a wild sitcom), two Florida inmates accused of murder have revealed how they managed to conceive a child together without ever meeting face-to-face. Daisy Link, 29, and Joan Depaz, 24, found love, connection, and apparently reproductive ingenuity while confined to separate cells.

The two murder suspects—charged with second-degree and first-degree murder, respectively—started their relationship through the prison’s air vents. Yes, you read that right: the same air vents that most people imagine Bruce Willis crawling through in *Die Hard.*

“Being in isolation for so long, you begin to spend hours and hours talking to this person,” Link explained in an interview. “To the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room with them.”

At some point during their vent-mediated courtship, Depaz reportedly confessed a lifelong dream. “I always really wanted to have a baby,” she told Link, “and I’m not gonna get to do that for a really long time. So if I had to choose somebody, you know, it would be you.”

Romantic, right? The kind of Hallmark movie moment we didn’t know we needed. But unlike your average lovebirds, these two had to get creative. And boy, did they deliver—literally.

So... How Did This Work Exactly?

Vent-Made Baby: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

In what can only be described as the boldest DIY project of all time, the couple devised a plan. Joan would, ahem, contribute his genetic material and roll it up “like a cigarette.” He’d then attach it to a line they’d rigged up in the vent system. Daisy would pull the line through on her end, collect the “delivery,” and get to work.

But wait, there’s more. Daisy didn’t just wing it—she repurposed a yeast infection applicator (yes, that) to inseminate herself. After a few attempts, it worked. She was pregnant.

If you’re wondering how two inmates with no access to Pinterest managed to pull off this level of logistical gymnastics, you’re not alone. Someone get these two a job in project management because who even thinks like this?—assuming they ever get out of prison, of course.

Baby Makes Three (Sort Of)

Daisy gave birth in June, and their now five-month-old baby is currently being cared for by Daisy’s mother. And if we’re being honest, Grandma is probably pissed. Imagine waking up one day to find out you’ve got a new grandchild, courtesy of your incarcerated daughter and her vent-bound lover.

While the baby’s arrival has brought joy to Daisy and Joan, it’s also brought some consequences. Prison officials, understandably shocked by this vent-powered love story, have since moved the couple to separate facilities. Still, Daisy says they talk on the phone regularly to stay connected.

A Love Story for the Ages?

On one hand, this is a bizarrely impressive tale of determination. On the other, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Like, who even thinks this up? While most people in prison are figuring out how to pass time, Daisy and Joan decided to turn the ventilation system into FedEx.

As for what’s next, both Daisy and Joan are awaiting trial, and the future of their relationship remains uncertain. But one thing’s for sure: no matter where life takes them, this is one story that’ll follow them forever.

And as for Grandma? Someone get her a nap, a glass of wine, and a medal, because she might just be the real MVP in all of this.

This was such a wild ride and I can't figure out if I want it to be a Netflix movie or not. Poor kid though, and poor gramma.

Oh my God, what?? Humans are totally wild. I mean, wow. I don’t even know what to think, other than this is peak absurdity. A friend once told me that our world seemed like an alternate universe written by the people who write for The Onion. Seems about right. But I feel for the parents. Regardless of their crimes. if their incarceration leads them to this kind of thinking and such a desperate action, that’s pretty rough.
