The question of what causes someone to develop pedophilic tendencies is complex, influenced by a range of psychological, social, and biological factors. Pedophilia is defined as a sexual attraction to prepubescent children and is considered a paraphilic disorder. Researchers believe several factors may contribute to a person becoming a pedophile. Brain abnormalities are believed to be one of the contributing factors, and in one specific case, a brain tumor. One of the contributing factors is believed to be brain abnormalities. One man says a brain tumor caused him to become a pedophile at age 40.

A Sudden Uncontrollable Urge in Sex & Child Pornography

Nearly 25 years ago, a man identified as “Mr. Oft” suddenly found himself struggling with an uncontrollable urge to child pornography. He collected photos and videos of children, careful to keep hidden from family and friends his disgusting acts. He was a married man who lived with his wife and stepdaughter. He knew his actions were wrong, yet the urges were beyond his control.

Mr. Oft enjoyed pornography and had since his "teenage years," he recalled. He had never felt an attraction toward children nor acted out toward them.

He lived a laid-back, hard-working life as a corrections officer until 2000 when he earned a Master's Degree and took work as a school teacher.

Along with an interest in child porn, Mr. Oft developed an insatiable urge to visit prostitutes and frequented brothels and massage parlors. He collected pornography magazines and visited pedophilia websites.

Then, he acted on his urges, making sexual advances toward his young stepdaughter. A few weeks later, she told her mother. She dug around and discovered her husband’s collection of pornography; most disturbingly, child porn.

She kicked him out of the house. He was diagnosed with pedophilia and prescribed Medroxyprogesterone, a drug commonly used to regulate menstrual cycles. He was convicted of child molestation and sentenced to complete a 12-step program for sexual addiction or face time behind bars.

Mr. Oft continued acting inappropriately toward nurses, staff members, and other clients, leading to his release from the program.

The night before trial for sentencing to prison, he was rushed to an emergency room with severe headaches, dizziness, and confusion.

He told a therapist at the hospital that he was afraid that he would rape his landlord. During testing, he asked female employees for sexual favors and urinated on himself without attempting to go to the restroom. He could not write, and his head twitched.

Doctors Find Brain Tumor, Remove It, and Cure Man of Sex Problems

Testing later determined Mr. Oft had a brain tumor, which could have been related to a brain injury from 1984, although doctors could not confirm. After surgeons removed the brain tumor, Oft became his old self again.

No longer was he attracted to kids or other women. He completed a Sexaholics Anonymous program and returned home to his wife.

Months later, he again began feeling urges to visit pornography sites, and the headaches returned. He visited a doctor and learned the tumor had returned. Doctors removed the tumor, and he was again cured of pedophilia.

New Scientist researchers concluded this is the first recorded case of pedophilia caused by a brain tumor.
