David Parker Ray: The Toy Box Killer

David Parker Ray raped, tortured, and murdered as many as 60 women inside a soundproof trailer he called the Toy Box. Ray assembled the torture chamber himself to the tune of $100,000.

What Happened Inside the Toy Box?

Ray was active from 1950 - 1999. His girlfriend, Cindy Hendy, and friend, Roy Yancey, assisted Ray with the tortures and murders. His daughter, Glenda “Jesse” Ray also participated in the torture of the victim. The Toy Box trailer sat beside his home in rural Elephant Butte, New Mexico, outfitted with sex toys, torture devices, and a gynecologist table that victims were tied down to. A mirror attached to the ceiling over the table forced victims to watch what was happening to them. Ray also played an audiotape detailing what was about to happen to them.

A small transcript from the 45-minute audio recording:

“You probably think you’re gonna be r**ed and you’re f*ckin’ sure right about that. Our primary interest is in what you’ve got between your legs. You’ll be r**ed thoroughly and repeatedly, in every hole you’ve got. Because, basically, you’ve been snatched and brought here for us to train and use as a sex slave. Sound kind of far out? Well, I suppose it is to the uninitiated, but we do it all the time. It’s gonna take a lot of adjustment on your part, and you’re not gonna like it a f*ckin’ bit. But I don’t give a big rat’s ass about that. It’s not like you’re gonna have any choice about the matter. You’ve been taken by force, and you’re going to be kept and used by force."

Victim Escapes the Toy Box

Ray’s last victim, Cynthia Vigil, escaped from the toy box after three days of torture when Ray was at work. She found the keys when Hendy was not paying attention. A brief fight ensued, but Vigil stabbed Hendy in the neck to escape.

Vigil ran outside and attempted to flag down a car as it passed by, however, it drove past the naked and battered woman. She then ran to a neighbor's house who called 911 for her. Police arrived and arrested Ray and Hendy about an hour later.

Hendy Testifies Against Ray, Yancy

None of the bodies were ever discovered, however, Hendy and one of the living victims came forward, giving prosecutors enough evidence to put Ray behind bars. Police also discovered a journal where Ray jotted down all the gruesome details about his crimes.

Ray accepted a plea deal sentencing him to 224 years in prison. He died of a heart attack in 2002.

Hendy testified against Yancey as well. She received a 26-year prison sentence but was released in 2019 after serving 19. Yancey was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend and sentenced to two 15-year prison terms.
