The Unexpected Proposal

How a Surprise Question Changed Lily’s Life Forever

By Jymo FiestaPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Lily had always dreamed of becoming a wedding planner. She loved everything about weddings: the dresses, the flowers, the cakes, the vows, the music, the dancing. She loved helping couples plan their perfect day and seeing them happy and in love.

She had worked hard to achieve her dream. She had studied at a prestigious college, interned at a renowned agency, and started her own business. She had built a reputation for being creative, professional, and reliable. She had a loyal clientele and a steady income.

She had everything she wanted.

Except for one thing.

She didn’t have a love of her own.

She had dated a few guys over the years, but none of them had been serious or lasting. She had never felt that spark, that connection, that magic that she saw in her clients. She had never met anyone who made her heart skip a beat, who made her laugh until she cried, who made her feel like she was the only woman in the world.

She had never met anyone like Ryan.

Ryan was Lily’s best friend since childhood. They had grown up together, gone to school together, and shared everything together. They had supported each other through good times and bad times, through joys and sorrows, through successes and failures. They knew each other inside and out, better than anyone else.

They were inseparable.

But they were not lovers.

They had never crossed that line, never seen each other in that way, never felt anything more than friendship for each other. They had always been platonic, always been comfortable, always been happy.

They had never been anything else.

Until one day, everything changed.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon in June. Lily was busy preparing for a wedding that she was organizing at a beautiful country estate. She was checking the decorations, the catering, the music, and the guests. She was making sure that everything was perfect for the bride and groom.

She was so focused on her work that she didn’t notice Ryan until he tapped her on the shoulder.

“Hey, Lily. Can I talk to you for a minute?”

She turned around and smiled at him.

“Hey, Ryan. What’s up?”

He looked nervous and excited at the same time.

“I have something to ask you.”

He took her hand and led her to a secluded spot under a large oak tree.

He looked into her eyes and took a deep breath.

“Lily, I love you.”

She blinked in surprise.

“What?”

“I love you, Lily. I’ve always loved you. Ever since we were kids. You’re my best friend, my soulmate, my everything. You’re the only one who makes me happy, who makes me feel alive, who makes me want to be a better man.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

He opened it and revealed a sparkling diamond ring.

He got down on one knee and held it up to her.

“Lily, will you marry me?”

She gasped in shock.

“Ryan…”

He looked at her with hope and fear in his eyes.

“Please, Lily. Say yes. Say you’ll be my wife. Say you’ll make me the happiest man in the world.”

She looked at him with confusion and disbelief in her eyes.

“Ryan…”

She didn’t know what to say.

She didn’t know what to do.

She didn’t know what to feel.

She didn’t know how to respond to his unexpected proposal.
