Childhood
Is it a bird?...Is it a plane?...No! It's my Dad!
Sunday, July 3, 2022 – Checking emails over my first cuppa of this chilly winter morning – reading that a new Vocal Challenge is up – “I love it! Gotta get movin’ on this one...This is gonna be a bloody breeze!’ I thought to myself. But, responsibilities beckon, get the basics done first though – you know ‘a woman's work is never done’ and all that shit. So, first things first, finish my smoke and then flick the kettle on for the second time this morning (approximately 5 minutes to story time!!! Soooo excited!!!). Ok, while that's doin’ its bubble and boil thingy, daily chores, here we go, I load the washing machine and start the eco quick cycle – Check! Load Dishwasher, start eco cycle (do you see a pattern here - I do care about the environment and our energy usage you know -dad always said to keep an eye on our carbon footprints and how much energy we consume ...”there’ll be wars over water and energy one day”) – Check! Spray ‘n’ Wipe ‘Labitchen’ – now I should explain very quickly what this means – we’re in the throes of building our home, so, in the shed at the moment we have a combined Laundry, Bathroom and Kitchen...you see what we did there ?...(clink) Yep, there it is, I heard the penny drop – you get it now. So anyway, on the kitchen bench sits my Darth Vadar mug that says ‘I like my coffee on the dark side’ (yeah, had to share that with ya, a little chuckle for you all at my expense, thank you very much), complete with 2 sugars and a lipton teabag hanging out waiting to steep – Check! Change out of the pj’s - Check!. Got my Star Wars fluffy socks on – Check!. Star Wars tracky-daks -Check! Fave black scarf – Check! ‘And tharrrr she blowwws!’, (hehehe...) sorry everyone, forgive me, I couldn't help it, it’s my slightly warped sense of humour getting the best of me – that's just what goes through my head every time the kettle boils. As I pour boiling water over my teabag this is what I do...‘(breathing out) Kssshhh, – (breathing in) Kssshhh, - and repeat - Kssshhh, Kssshhh’ – again, my giggles are getting the better of me this morning – that's what I do each time I fill up my Darth Vadar Mug...I know, I'm incorrigible...I blame it on my dad – his sense of humour really is first rate – in my eyes anyway!...just ask my friends about the shit that he used to tell us all about when he was a kid...I swear, we all held our bellies from laughing so much it hurt! Ok, back to getting writing ready to tell you a story about my dad...but which one??? Hmmm...

Margaret Keane Dies: Kitschy ‘Big Eyes’ Artist, Subject Of Tim Burton Biopic Was 94
Margaret Keane, whose popular paintings of big-eyed, melancholy children became one of the most widely recognized signature artistic styles of the late 20th century — and whose long battle with her husband over his fraudulent and lucrative claims of authorship inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film Big Eyes starring Amy Adams — died Sunday at her home in Napa, CA. She was 94.

Now That It’s Almost Over. Top Story - June 2022.
I have begun spotting. And what could spotting be at my age except a harbinger of perimenopause which is a harbinger of menopause? Last night I asked Google, What causes spotting? Why am I spotting? How long does spotting last? Then I asked Google to go deeper: Show me images of spotting. Show me images of extreme spotting. Show me images of spotting gone horribly wrong. Google was only too happy to oblige.

My Story Part 2
I firmly believe that everything in life happens for a reason. I don't know what that reason is, but I know that if anything would have happened differently throughout my life, I wouldn't be where I am right now. I don't remember most of my childhood. I was born in Kingman, Arizona and lived there for the first couple years of my life. I lived in Tracy, California for about four years, which I don't remember too much of. The most I remember from this house was playing with dolls in front of the door when my father came home from work. He didn't know I was there and he hit me in the face with the door when he entered the house, knocking my loose tooth out. I later lost that tooth somewhere in my house and never found it.

The things I learned from my father
It's a bit hard to remember my father at times. He had a lot of health issues towards the end of his life and became a person who was, shall we say, not nice to be around. He also had bipolar disorder, which was untreated, and he refused to take his medicine the way he should, adding to the problems, as well as the fact that a few of his medicines made him downright mean. My mother, two brothers and I basically took it as long as we could, then moved away, unable to take it anymore, but my brothers and I still stayed in touch on occasion until his death several years ago.

You'll Grow A Watermelon in Your Belly!. Top Story - June 2022.
Dear Dad, "If you swallow the seeds, you'll grow a watermelon in your belly!" sounds like an iconic Dad joke. Your child, aka me, remembers hearing the phrase well! Occasionally, it was even stretched to include apples seeds! Yikes! I was a gullible child, and oh-so-fun to pick on!

Orange Jello Salad
It was the morning of July 4th 1995. I was 7 years old. My family always bought enough fireworks to light up the sky for hours. We would spend the day at the lake grilling, swimming, fishing, racing in the water and playing a hide and go seek game. I remember the time as magical and full of wonder.

Unwanted Words From An Unwanted Baby
In a time of abortion bills and crazy fights against the government for women, I found out something about myself back in my senior year of college. It was 2019 and I had the random thought to talk to my mom. I called her after class and we just had a normal conversation. My mom and I did not really have a good relationship with good boundaries to not get into arguments. The thought came up to me and I said “Mom I am old enough now and I want to ask what happened to my dad?” She paused for a bit before asking me why would I want to know now. I just looked at the table before answering again. “I just thought I should know now.” She said “Well when I found out I was pregnant with you, I told the guy I was with about my pregnancy. He was not really happy about the news. He gave me two options for what to do. He said ‘I could either get rid of you and stay with him or keep you and he leaves me.’ So I decided to keep you.”

Sacandaga Stew. Top Story - June 2022.
For the five of us kids crammed into the back of the wood-paneled Suburban station wagon, the first sign that we were approaching our destination came through our eager noses, lifted to take in the redolent scent of pine. The crisp fragrance wafted over us like the richest of perfumes, filling all of our senses as we watched the tree-lined mountain road unroll past the car windows. Sure, there were pine trees in other places along our journey from Hopewell Junction, NY to the Great Sacandaga Lake, just past the small town of Northville in the Adirondack Mountains. But the pines never smelled so invigorating as they did pulling into the campground where we would spend the summer.

Dependable Traditions
We lived in New Jersey surrounded by trees in what my father referred to as, “a curious old house.” On Christmas Eve, we had a family tradition. Actually, we had many, but my favorite one was when my father read, Twas the Night before Christmas to the family.
