Was Ed Sheeran under the influence when he sang the song "perfect" or was everything he said true? Did he really feel those things?
Can you actually feel ok seeing somebody smile or did Ruth B lie in "Dandelions"? Can you really see forever in a person's eyes?
These questions were asked by a friend of mine and seriously I wondered about it too. There's a saying that "You listen to the song when you are sad, but when you're really feeling it, you listen to the lyrics". I guess this is true because I've never really thought about the lyrics of these songs, like really really thought about them.
I don't think I've ever been in love before but I once had a massive crush on someone and the feeling it gives is so exciting. The rush of butterfly you get when you see the person, the excitement you feel when he/she talks to you or touches you, the joy you feel when you talk about the person or even think about him/her. Yes, I felt all these things, and it was just a crush that faded away! Now imagine what love will feel like.
So my answer to the above questions is YES, it is possible to feel those things the singers mentioned and at a point in their life, they might have felt these things too. I think, just a personal opinion though, that if you don't feel things, some of the things mentioned in those songs (like when Ruth B said "When you're looking at me, I've never felt so alive and free . When you're looking at me, I've never felt so happy" in Dandelions) maybe, just maybe you're not in deep as you thought.
I think the love mentioned in those songs are not illusions, they really exist. You just need to find the right person to feel these things for and when you do, you'll realize that love is real.
What if you were in deep before and then you got your heart broken and you are now starting to question the lyrics of every love song - thinking that all the writers were just being delusional when they wrote the songs?
That was the next question my friend asked and seriously, I don't have a direct answer for that but I know that the heart heals and even though it might take time, you'll eventually find another person that makes you feel again. Some might think people who feel love, feel things when they are in love are just being delusional, but if you are really in love, so deeply in love, you'll feel things and you just might not know it yet.
The excitement you get from seeing a message or call from the person, the butterfly you get from every moment, the joy you derive from their smile or the way they look at you, the assurance you have that they'll always listen when you need to talk and even the slight jealousy you feel when another person is getting too close. No matter how small, no matter how little, they are still feelings.
These are just my personal opinions and I'll really like to know what others think: What motivates singers to write and sing about love; Love or Delusion?.
