Longing for a Life Beyond the Noise

How one dream of simplicity and nature offers hope amid life’s heavy responsibilities?

Finding My Way: Dreaming of a Simpler Life Amid Responsibilities

Life doesn’t always go as planned, and sometimes, in the midst of responsibilities, we find ourselves longing for something different. A whisper of a dream, a vision of a life we wish we could have—but don’t know how to achieve.

This is where I am now.

In my 40s, single, and working overseas in the Middle East, my days revolve around supporting my family—my mother and siblings back home. It’s a responsibility I’ve shouldered with love, but it comes with sacrifices. Lately, I’ve been asking myself: What about me?

I find myself dreaming of a simpler, quieter life. A place where the air is fresh, the trees are alive with green and yellow leaves, and there’s a park nearby where I can sit and breathe. I imagine a small church where I can reflect and a body of water nearby, calming my soul with its endless rhythm.

It’s a beautiful dream—but one I can’t yet reach or afford.

The Weight of Responsibility

When you’re the one others depend on, it’s easy to put your own needs and dreams on hold. For years, I’ve focused on making sure my family is taken care of. It’s a duty I don’t take lightly, but it’s also one that often leaves little room for my own hopes.

At times, I feel lost. I don’t know what job would truly suit me or how to take the steps to create the life I long for. I’ve spent decades working in the corporate world, navigating facility management, project coordination, and operations—but none of it feels like me.

The Dream I Keep Coming Back To

In quiet moments, I close my eyes and imagine a place where life feels lighter. A home surrounded by nature—trees that sway with the breeze, sunlight dancing on leaves, a nearby park where I can simply be. There’s a small church where I can find peace, and the sound of water flows like a balm for my restless mind.

But reality pulls me back. I don’t have the money to make such a dream come true. I don’t know how to step away from the life I’ve built here, even if it feels like it doesn’t fit me anymore.

And yet, the dream remains.

What I’ve Learned About Starting Over

Perhaps you feel this way too—torn between the life you have and the life you wish you could live. If so, here’s what I’m learning:

1. It’s Never Too Late to Change

I used to think that being in my 40s meant my choices were limited. But I’m beginning to realize that age is just a number. Every day is a chance to take a small step toward something better.

2. Dreams Don’t Have to Be Big to Matter

While I may not be able to move to my dream place just yet, I can find ways to bring it into my current life. Visiting parks, creating a small green space in my home, or simply spending time in quiet reflection are small but meaningful steps.

3. You’re Allowed to Care for Yourself Too

Supporting others is important, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of your own happiness. It’s okay to tell your loved ones how you feel, to ask for understanding, and to carve out time for your own well-being.

4. Start Where You Are

Dreams don’t happen overnight. I’ve started looking at career paths that align with my love for nature and simplicity—jobs in hospitality, eco-tourism, or places connected to the environment. Even if it takes years, it’s a step closer.

A Journey, Not a Destination

For now, I’m still here—working hard, supporting my family, and dreaming of a life that feels more like home. It’s not easy, but I’m learning to trust the process. To believe that even small steps can lead to big changes.

-You’re not stuck; you’re evolving, even if it feels uncertain.

Maybe someday, I’ll walk through that park, breathe in the fresh air, and feel the peace I’ve been longing for. Until then, I’ll hold onto my dream and keep taking small steps forward.

Because life, no matter how heavy it feels, is still full of possibility.
