Before the Fall
Hari had been three hours late for our first date. There had been no apology. There had been no hello, either. There was only a phone call that began “… before you start ranting at me, let me explain…” He instructed me to travel to Russell Square after making me wait so long, which I grudgingly did. When I got to the station, my phone rang. It was him. He was standing on the other side of the road, but I did not immediately see him. I saw two old men. He said the two old men were Indian, like him, and that he was the other Indian guy, implying I was race blind. The two old men were both white. He had a hang up about race that I never fully understood. When we first began talking after meeting online, he had said he wanted to talk to me on the telephone but said he hoped I didn’t mind his thick Indian accent. I said, “of course not”, while feeling very confused. If he was born in London, why would he have a thick Indian accent? When he did eventually telephone me, there was no Indian accent at all. I never mentioned it, and neither did he.

Top 5 Essential Thrift-finds Found Whilst Shopping at Thrift-stores
I have always been an avid fan of thrift-finds at thrift-stores. I remember when I was a little girl, my mother would wake me up early in the morning, ask me to get dressed, slip into my flimsy pair of sandals, finish the milk and bread roll, while she finishes her coffee too. After that quick breakfast, she grabs the basket with her right hand, and grabs my tiny hand with her left hand and then off to market we go.

King For A Night
King For A Night John W. Gilmore The 5th floor was the place to be in Johnson Hall on the weekends, and we started the weekend Thursday nights. The Residential Assistant would pack up his bags in the morning and take the Greyhound bus home for the weekend to avoid having to interfere with the Thursday night craziness, when we would order a keg of beer, turn up the music, and invite as many people as possible to crowd into a small dorm room with the challenge of kicking the keg before anyone went home.

The Epitomes
I didn't know that I was being bullied until I had moved back home from the city; I've made myself a place in my mind where I could escape and leave the memories of the past. The rumbling sound of the train reminded me to wake up and know where to put myself every day I rode the train. The seats stuck to the side of the train for dear life, like they too could fall off if the bridges that held up the train on my way to the city again. I tried staying at home where I could've possibly renew the soil of my heritage where my roots stay. The smell in the east, the wind and way the sun hits differently here. It's like the nature read your actions and are giving you the answers here. An answer as to why I never seemed to fit in.

Don't Die Over a Spilled Merlot
There was nothing celebratory about that New Year’s Eve. Nirvana was playing at the Cow Palace, but neither of us had gotten tickets. Me and Sal, Salvador Puggio, the Pug Cell, had finished off the the fifth of Peppermint Schnapps he’d stolen from his mom’s liquor cabinet and we were wandering around Golden Gate Park at 11:38 pm as 1992 died away. Drizzly piss rain soaked us through and a bitter wind blew off the Bay. There were plenty of teen parties going on all over the city, but me and Pug couldn’t crash any of them. When it came to teen parties and getting wasted we were the worst type of opportunists. Jackals, hyenas and coyotes would have been more welcome house guests. We were skate punks with a rep for trashing houses when we got too twisted.

A Tear in the Fabric
I was very excited that Saturday. My mom had bought me a new pair of sandals. These weren’t just any pair of sandals. These sandals had a heel. For an eleven-year-old girl, any shoe with a heel meant you were a grown up. That isn’t really true but when you’re, young unspoken rules ruled. I couldn’t wait to wear those sandals and Saturday was the day. Saturday my sisters and I had our weekly Girls Scout meeting and I was determined to be the envy of every scout in the room. I had chosen my outfit to wear with my sandals the night before. I knew how I would wear my hair. This was going to be my shining moment. I was going to be a star. Here’s what I didn’t know. The pants I had chosen were a little to tight and it wasn’t very easy to walk in heels when you have never done it before even if the heel is only an inch and a half.

Dream Date
Life has a habit of teaching you lessons when you least expect it. What can appear to be slight and insignificant can have lasting effects. As a bartender in Los Angeles I could have sworn that there was nothing I have not done and seen both on the job and off. Wild brawls and late night romps while working behind the bar proved to be great for tips which helped me make rent and splurge on extras. I love my job and the people and experiences it has brought me. Each night is a new adventure and last Friday night was no exception. I work at the “Love Boat”, a trendy hipster bar in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. Originally, I had applied to a security position, however once I showed up to the interview the manager took one look and me with exploitation in his eyes and decided my six foot three inch self might do better behind the bar. I can’t complain, as a single man in my mid twenties I am not about to turn down any opportunity to meet women.

A most embarrassing moment in time
I was 17 years old and a senior in high school and had briefly dated a young man for 4 months that I will refer to as Benny. We actually only went out once and that was a triple date to a school dance. There were 7 of us in the vehicle and it was not much fun. I was head over heels in love with him, or so I thought when I found out he had never really broken up with his previous girlfriend. I was heartbroken and did not feel as if I would ever get over him. One Friday night after we broke up there was a party at the Masonic lodge near my home. When Benny and his friends came in the building my heart began to flutter.

Red Camera Flip Phone
May 27th... We had just arrived home from church. The kids jumped out of the car and start grabbing the horse riding gear. Ruth and Mark packed up their lunches for the day and, within the hour, they were gone. Meanwhile, I stayed home, in my basement apartment and play video games. It was a normal day. College was out for the summer. I started two new jobs in the upcoming week. We were all on great terms. Nothing to have my stomach in knots for. It was 3:49 PM when that changed. I'm sitting on the couch in my living room playing Spider-Man on the Xbox when Mark opens the basement door and calls me to come up the stairs. Still nothing suspicious. I even respond jokingly with "I didn't do it this time!", which was my typical response. God, I wish I knew how inappropriate that was at the time!

Run!
Have you ever been to prison? Unfortunately for me, I have! 688 days, but who’s counting? Today is my 8th anniversary of freedom, 04/01/13. I wish this was a joke, APRIL FOOLS, but it's not. April won't commemorate my marriage, the day I got clean, or spring break. The only shower that April brings is rein over my release date. Yeah, so today definitely marked a milestone and before I go further I have to say: a limited 5,000 words really steals the justice from my story, but I will give it my damnedest!
