Childhood Memories

Just a few

By Mother CombsPublished 11 months ago 5 min read

Recently, Chloe Rose Violet wrote about her childhood memories and asked us about some of our own. You can read about her childhood memories at the link below ⬇️⬇️⬇️.

1. My earliest childhood memory is a rather vague one of my mother putting a cloth diaper (she swears I was a Pamper's only child, though... I know better) on me and poking me with a diaper pin. I kicked her in her face. It must not have been too long after this that she started potty training me.

2. Speaking of potty training...I once ran to my potty chair because I had to go bad. While sitting there, I yawned, and a fly flew right in and hit my tonsils! I coughed, gagged, and spit that fly right out...onto my mom's makeup mirror. I remember hearing her gripe at my oldest half-brother, asking him why he left a dead fly on her mirror. She didn't believe him when he told her it wasn't him. I remember laughing in my room and my daddy asking me what was so funny.

3. I remember my dad teaching us how to shoot his handgun when I was about four. He took us to a little lake around the Ft. Worth area, and we made a day of it, with a picnic and everything. What stood out the most, though, was me throwing a fit over the fact that my two older half-brothers both got to take their shirts off, but my mom refused to let me because I was a girl. It had to be a hundred degrees in the shade that summer day, and besides that, I told her it was so unfair (I wished I'd known the word sexist then; I'd used it). My daddy, bless him, compromised with me and let me put my shirt behind my neck but still on my shoulders.

4. I remember the day the above picture was taken. I was about four, it was before my parents divorced. My father had just bought this property in East Texas that he planned to move us to, and he was so excited. He took his brother (my uncle), my two half-brothers, and me to look at this beautiful piece of what I thought was heaven back then. That's me, standing beside the old barn. My dad had me stand there to compare size. He was a funny man. A wild multi-rose bush stood directly in front of the barn. You can't tell in this picture, but my hair was a tangled mess of curls that had never seen a pair of scissors. *Fun Fact: My dad LIVED in this barn for two years before he built a house for us to visit him in. A church member let him use their extra house for our visits with him during this time.

5. I've never once blamed myself for my parents' divorce. I've always understood why it happened. My mother was way too friendly with my father's friends. My father was and IS a jealous man. He shot the house up with us kids in it. Cops were called, Veterans Affairs got involved, and he served some time in the stress unit in Waco's Veteran's Hospital. This all happened before my sixth birthday. I didn't see my dad again till I was in the first grade, so I was seven or eight.

6. My dad kidnapped my second half-brother and me and took us to see his Aunt in Kansas. I remember my grandma, mom's mom, running after the truck, mad as hell, screaming she was going to call the cops. She never did, my mom told her my dad would return us. She was right. After we had a blast for two weeks with cousins we didn't even know we had, his Aunt talked him into doing the right thing and taking us back. I sort of miss playing in the wheat fields and silo elevators...

7. The above picture is my ex-step-sister and me, the Christmas before I got my glasses (age eleven). I'm including this one, even though it's fuzzy, because I want you to understand this is how I was seeing the world at this time. See those fake rabbit boot-slippers? Those were the warmest houseshoes ever and so cute. By the way, that was one of those new Guess watches on my wrist that everyone was raving about back then, and they had to have one. This was such a happy Christmas. Quiet, too, with only two kids in the house. At my mom's house, there were eight kids at the time.

8. Once, when I was ten while living with my mom, my step-sister and I were watching Haloween III: Season of the Witch on VHS. Her brother decided at the scariest scene to climb through the window behind the television and scream boo at us two girls. I may or may not have peed my pants. You decide.

9. The Picture above and the picture below both were taken the same day. They are both special in their right. I couldn't pick which one to share from my memory of this day, so I'm including both.

In the top one, It was the first time I met my little half-brother, the first time I held him, and the first time I got to hug him. I remember being the proudest big sister in the world at that moment. I still am, even though he isn't as cute today.

In the one under this, you will see my grandma and me holding a singing teddy bear from Finger Hut. My grandma had been diagnosed with bladder cancer, and by the time it was found, it had already attacked her lymph nodes. She didn't live long after this picture. This woman meant the world to me, and I wish this day would have lasted longer than it did.

Why was this the first time I'd met my little brother and the last time I'd seen my grandmother? My mother had sent me to live with my daddy when I was eleven, and my stepmom was a cruel bitch who wanted control of everyone and everybody. She wouldn't allow my dad to send me to even see his mother for a long time. I had to throw a temper tantrum at the age of thirteen to go spend the summer with my gee. The only reason I was allowed to go see my grandma was because my dad had gotten word that she was dying.

10. I hated the Christian private school years. The only good thing bout it was the fact that I looked awesome in red or blue. Seriously, though, I felt like a complete nerd in that jumper, with those plastic frame glasses and long waist-length hair. My stepmom was not very good at taking pictures, or she had a crappy camera.

I could go on forever with the memories I have. Probably boring you to death with the memories I have shared. So, I figure I better stop here.

It was nice taking this little walk down Memory Lane. It's brought up a lot of old memories, some bad, most good. All of them have helped shape me into the person I am today.

If you haven't already, drop by Chloe's article and show her some love. She's got some awesome memories herself.

Thx for sharing! I really enjoyed learning more about you & your life! grandmas are the best! We are age twins, therefore I remember those Guess watches and Cabbage Patch dolls very well! Lol 😂

  • What do you mean boring??? It was so interesting reading this! I have to many things to say and ask. I'll number them according to the memory hehehehe 1. I loveeeeee how you kicked your mom in the face for poking you with a diaper pin 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 4. If you didn't tell me that you were in that barn photo, I wouldn't have known! 5. I'm so sorry your parents got divorced. I side with your dad though. I wouldn't like it if my partner was too friendly with the opposite gender 7. How does one become an ex stepsister? 8. Ugh your stepmom is such a horrible person!

What a ride through those memories! The whole “shirt behind my neck” thing had me laughing, and that little brother moment? Too sweet. Glad you took us on this stroll down memory lane! Your life was definitely anything but boring—thanks for sharing! ✨

This wasn’t in the least bit boring. Maybe it’s because I’m incredibly nosy but I love hearing stories about their childhood. You definitely went through a lot in those early years. Thought this was a really good read.

  • Wonderful memories, sad memories, & a whole lot in between. Thank you for sharing, Mother.

Quite a fascinating trip down memory lane. This is quite the ride. Sounds like quite the childhood.

This was not boring at all, Sharon. You have such early childhood memories that indicate you were an early bloomer, mentally. Most people's earliest childhood memories are from the age of 5-6.
