So this is the reason why Bumrah did not get the Test captaincy, Jaspreet himself made a big revelation
Bumrah

After Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, many cricket experts and fans expected Jasprit Bumrah to take over as the new captain of the Indian Test team. Bumrah, who has been a key figure in India’s bowling attack for years, had also served as vice-captain under Rohit on several occasions and was seen as the natural successor. His leadership qualities and experience made him a strong contender. However, in a surprising move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team management appointed the young and talented 26-year-old Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian Test side.
Shubman Gill’s first major responsibility as captain will begin with the upcoming five-match Test series against England. This high-stakes series will start with the first Test on June 20 at the iconic Headingley ground in Leeds. While there was curiosity among fans and pundits about why Bumrah wasn’t chosen despite being the frontrunner, the pacer himself has now put an end to all speculations by opening up about the real reason behind his decision to not take up the captaincy role.
Jasprit Bumrah made a big disclosure

In an interview with *Sky Sports* just days before the start of the England Test series, Jasprit Bumrah revealed that he had, in fact, been approached by the BCCI regarding the leadership role. Bumrah explained that although he felt honored by the offer, he had to turn it down because of concerns about his physical workload. As a fast bowler, especially one who has dealt with several injuries in recent years, Bumrah understands the toll that back-to-back Test matches can take on his body.
Speaking about the situation, Bumrah said, “Before Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements, I had already been in touch with the BCCI during the IPL season. We discussed my fitness and workload, especially in the context of the long five-match Test series coming up against England.” He further added that after careful discussions with the coaching staff and medical team, it was decided that it wouldn’t be wise for him to take on additional responsibilities.
Bumrah also mentioned that he wanted to be completely honest with the team management and not mislead them into thinking he could lead the side throughout the series. “I told them clearly that I wouldn’t be able to play all five Test matches. Taking on the captaincy and then missing games wouldn’t be fair to the team,” Bumrah said. He stressed the importance of continuity in leadership and pointed out that constantly changing captains mid-series could disrupt team dynamics and strategy.
“The BCCI had faith in me, and they saw me as a strong option to lead the team. But I had to prioritize the team’s stability and my physical limitations. I’ve always believed in putting the team before myself. If I had taken up the captaincy and missed a couple of games, it would have sent the wrong message,” he explained.
Bumrah’s mature and team-first attitude reflects his deep understanding of the game and his sense of responsibility as a senior player. By stepping aside and allowing a fully fit and available Shubman Gill to take charge, he has ensured that the team has a consistent leader throughout the series.
This decision also gives Gill a golden opportunity to showcase his leadership qualities and prepare for a long-term role as a captain. With support from experienced players like Bumrah, Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), and the guidance of interim coach VVS Laxman, the Indian team will look to start this new era on a strong note against England.
