When Hearts Collide.

Chapter 2: Storms and Stumbles.

By Krypton Published 8 months ago 3 min read

The Marlowe Bay Summer Festival was a mosaic of light and sound that filled the heart of the sleepy town with vibrant energy. Lanterns dangled above the streets, glowing like fireflies as dusk fell. Laughter and the music of a local folk band playing on a temporary wooden stage mixed with laughter from every corner. Ava observed the celebrations as they progressed from the town square's edge. She wore a casual navy dress and a loose braid over her shoulder, her sandals tapping nervously against the pavement. She wasn’t sure why she had come. Maybe it was the lemonade promise. Maybe it was the look in Liam’s eyes earlier that day. Maybe it was the part of her that was tired of running.

She scanned the crowd and spotted Liam near a lemonade stand, chatting with an elderly couple and laughing heartily. He turned, as if sensing her, and his face lit up. He walked over, holding two cups.

“I was starting to think you’d changed your mind,” he said, offering her one.

“I almost did,” she admitted, taking the drink. “But something told me I’d regret it.”

“Good instincts,” he said with a grin.

They strolled through the festival together, sampling funnel cakes, watching kids on the carousel, and listening to the band. Every few steps, someone waved or called out Liam’s name. He seemed to know everyone, and everyone seemed to like him.

“You’re kind of a big deal around here,” Ava teased.

“Small town. You stick around long enough, and people start thinking you’re furniture.”

They wandered toward the beach as the sun dipped below the horizon. The sand was lit by strings of fairy lights, and a group of teenagers were setting up a bonfire. Liam gestured to a quiet spot where they could sit.

“So, Ava,” he said, after a comfortable silence, “What really brought you here?”

She hesitated. “The ocean. Peace. And... a little escape.”

“From?”

She sighed. “A breakup. Five years, and then suddenly... nothing. It left a hole I didn’t know how to fill.”

Liam nodded. “I get it. I lost my dad last year. It made the city feel… meaningless. So I came back. Figured fixing up his old house would help fix something in me too.”

The waves were whispering secrets to the shore as they sat in silence. The sky rumbled suddenly. Ava looked up. “That wasn’t in the forecast.”

“Welcome to coastal living,” Liam said, standing up. “We better head back before it—”

Before he could finish, the first drops fell. Within seconds, it was pouring.

They laughed as they ran, slipping through crowds, splashing through puddles. Liam led her to an old wooden gazebo near the docks.

“So much for my charming festival invite,” he said, wiping rain from his brow.

“I don’t know,” Ava said, breathless. “I kind of like it.”

He looked at her then, really looked. Her dress stuck to her body, the rain clung to her lashes, and her cheeks flushed. There was a shift between them. A spark, undeniable and electric.

He leaned in slightly. “You’ve got this way of looking at the world… like it’s still worth loving.”

Ava’s heart pounded. “And you’ve got a way of making me believe that again.”

The moment stretched.

But just as their lips were about to meet, a sudden gust of wind blew water sideways into the gazebo, and they jumped apart, laughing again.

“Okay, maybe the universe is saying not tonight,” Liam chuckled.

“Maybe,” Ava agreed, though part of her wished it hadn’t.

He walked her back to her cottage, and they stood at her doorstep, dripping wet.

“Goodnight, Ava.”

“Goodnight, Liam.”

He walked away, and she watched him go, a strange flutter dancing in her chest.

Back inside, wrapped in a towel, she stood at the window and whispered, “What are you doing to me, Liam Carter?”

Outside, the storm passed, and the stars emerged.
