The Timekeepers' Dilemma: A Story of Time Travel, Ethics, and the Fragility of Reality

Proof of Time Travel: The Ethical Dilemmas of Rewriting History

By Irfan AkPublished 11 months ago 5 min read

Last time I put my finger on a history book, a question popped in my mind that I could not answer, “What would rewriting it look like?”. Changing the past might seem impossible, but how amazing is to imagine being able to do so? As striking as time travel sounds, I’m left scratching my head thinking, “is it purely fictional?” and the worst part: “What if it’s dangerous and real?”

This story goes deeply into talking about the moral and legal arguments regarding time travel.

Prologue: The Shambolic Timeline

When the rogue Timekeeper set their sight on the year 1912, they wanted the feeling electric. With a switch set to the right position, 1912 turned into a powder keg of light and sound. They were now standing on the deck of the Titanic, its splendor bathed in the starlit sky. One single push, something a lot of people wouldn’t think twice about was going to send the entire world back to square negative one. The ripple effect was instantaneous.

The Empire State Building- a renowned landmark was set for demolishing as everyone their eyes on the new age modernized America. The park was their new goal. The vision loosed credit bid open commanding everyone to set off bombs.

"All change is but a crack in the mirror of time,” the renegade said and disappeared into the past again.

Chapter 1: The Recruitment

Welcome to the shoes of Elliot, the historian who had a specific talent of sifting through ancient texts and pulling out their forgotten tales. Unfortunately, you were on the verge of chronic disillusionment and that is nothing short of a nightmare. You feel the world on a monotonous loop, relentlessly committing the same errors ad infinitum. One day you decide to go to a library with a gentle vibe and aging books, all you want is some quiet time with the ancient scriptures, only to have a woman appear out if the blue.

Time does not move in a clockwise manner for her, only analog. As you or I would put it – time isn’t linear. That in and of itself puts her outside our realm. She has a tale to tell and it is about a society known as the Timekeepers, whose purpose is controlling and evading the timeline set for this world. Their one job and goal is to make sure no one messes with the past for their self-interests.

“You have a unique gift,” a calm Mare said this time. Still, stunned by what she claimed to preserve I could not move. “You comprehend the impact history poses. Join us.”

Making history so not ‘untarnished’ as said Mare puts it, only ever untouched by anyone but me. That's tempting now isn’t it? And that is exactly what I am, or this world, stepping into.

Chapter 2: The Rules of Time

Training begins at a covert facility with an array of clocks synchronously ticking. As always, there is a rule to follow and Mara wastes no time in explaining:

1. Never interact with your past self.

2. Never alter a key historical event.

3. Never stay longer than necessary.

A Timekeeper introduces you to Lena, who becomes your mentor, and Kai, an insubordinate Timekeeper with a contrarian outlook and a few questions of his own. “What’s the reason behind these rules?” Kai questions. “Why do we have the authority to act as a higher power?”

Your very first order is ‘easy.’ All you need to do is keep tabs on the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but the moment you begin watching the congressional debates, you spot a lurking shadow within the corner of the room. Someone is trying to change history.

Chapter 3: The First Crack

With no thought, you breach Rule 2 in an attempt to stop the figure attempting to alter history. The figure disappears but the harm is already done. After returning to the present, the world feels different and when looking around those feelings are validated. The air is different; the timeline is strained.

Even though Mara reprimands you, there’s some level of fear in her eyes. She confesses, “We are facing a larger threat. A Timekeeper goes rogue, altering history for reasons unbeknown to us.”

Chapter 4: The Rogue’s Gambit

You and Lena are tasked with tracing the steps of the rogue. Throughout your journey, you visit monumental periods in history including the trenches of World War I, the streets of ancient Rome, and during the chaos of the Black Death. Time and time again, you always manage to discover signs of the rogue's interference. There are moments filled with suffering being erased and lives being saved as history gets rewritten.

Finally you decide to confront the rogue during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is none other than Kai.

“Why are you doing this?” you demand.

Kai's eyes burn with conviction as he boldly states, “If we can intervene to stop suffering, is there any reason not to? Who draws the line on which timeline is right?”.

Chapter 5: The Dilemma

Kai’s words shake you to the core, simply because they are uncomfortably accurate. They force you to reflect on your own life and the losses you've faced in your past. What would happen if you were able to alter the past? What would happen if you were given the chance to save a loved one?

But the timeline appears to be fracturing, as the present merges with alternate realities to create a chaotic mosaic of different timelines. Eventually, you confront Mara in order to get some answers.

“Truth is not up to us to determine,” she bitterly remarks. “What we choose is what is required.”

The Timekeepers do not keep history; they are in fact controlling it and the shocking realization sinks in like a bolt from the blue.

Chapter 6: The Choice

Help Kai complete the last change or alteration that might be the solution to global catastrophe and in the end, the decision rests with you. Reality shifts and you find yourself in an entirely new timeline. Though the world is better, it feels quite unfamiliar. You are now alone without the Timekeepers, contemplating what you have done.

“Would you change history if you had the opportunity?” Lingers the question that is never replied to.

The Proof of Time Travel: A Reality or a Mirage?

For the longest time, a debate has existed surrounding travel back in time. Everything from Einstein’s relativity to quantum mechanics has been theorized. An article published on TechScienceHub suggests something other than the long standing theories, that evidence to support time travel existing is growing and difficult to refute. From conducting experiments on particles moving faster than light to discovering wormholes, the proof of time travel is escalating.

However, every theory has its gaps and this narrative demonstrates that time travel is far more complicated than it seems. It is not just about the technology, it is about the ethics, the fallout, and the burden of every action taken.
