The Rise of Aliko Dangote Part 7

Part 7

By JerryPublished about a year ago 1 min read

One of the earliest manufacturing ventures was in sugar refining. Dangote understood that sugar was a staple in the Nigerian diet, and there was a vast market for locally refined sugar, which would be fresher and more affordable than imported varieties. He established sugar refineries capable of producing high-quality sugar, which not only supplied the local market but also began to meet the needs of regional neighbors, establishing Dangote Sugar as a dominant force in West Africa.

Following the success in sugar, the Dangote Group expanded into flour milling. Flour was another essential product with high demand, particularly given the staple role of bread in the Nigerian diet. By establishing flour mills, the Dangote Group was able to produce and distribute flour at a competitive price, further entrenching its position in the food sector. The success of these early ventures in sugar and flour laid the groundwork for even greater expansion into other sectors.

Recognizing the importance of packaging for his growing array of products, Dangote also ventured into the production of packaging materials. This move was driven by the need to maintain control over the quality and supply of packaging, which was crucial for the preservation and transportation of goods. The Dangote Group began producing its own packaging materials, including polypropylene bags, which were used to package everything from cement to flour. This vertical integration strategy not only reduced costs but also improved the efficiency of the company’s supply chain, ensuring that its products were consistently of high quality and competitively priced.
