Before Lilit could react in any way, she heard a voice from far away yelling, “He is kidding! Do not listen to him!” Looking behind Durojaiye, Lilit saw another one of the immigrants attempting to roll down the aisle to her station. He was not making much progress as he did not seem to have regained a lot of strength in his arms yet to push the wheels along. Although, by the looks of him, Lilit doubted that he ever could have had much power within his flabby exterior. Whereas Durojaiye appeared to be in peak physical shape, the newcomer looked like a beachball. Lilit began to feel a pang of guilt at the thought and filed it away for future self-improvement. Even in a place like Aestas, prejudice had not been completely overcome. Sure, predetermined judgements based on the superficial components like skin tone had been largely put behind them, but plenty of other ones remained, especially socio-economic concerns.

Alarms screamed overhead as she pushed through the flood of people in the narrow corridor. Killey was traveling against the flow of traffic-again. This was the summation of her short 50 years… to go against the flow. In her opinion if you go with everyone else, you will only achieve the status quo. The crowds began to thin, and she brought her mind back to the present moment. She often ran to her thoughts when in the throngs of people. The alarm was still screaming but as she got closer to the control room it quieted. Her hands shook as she swiped her key card. Her breathing was rapid-half from the run-half from the panic.

He flashed a smile full of bright white teeth and said, “Hello, I am Durojaiye Yakubu, your humble servant, as someone close to me would say.” His voice carried through the speakers hidden inside her chamber on the other side of the glass, just as Lilit’s would now do for him.

After clearing the decontamination chamber, Lilit stepped out directly into her workstation area. She didn’t understand why she had to go through the process since at this juncture she was still separated from the new arrivals by an impermeable wall of plexiglass, but the powers that be on Aestas were always exceedingly cautious about the potential transfer of pathogens. Sighing, she gave in and accepted that in an enclosed environment like theirs it was a reasonably prudent precaution. Still, being separated from people during first introductions always made things difficult. Lilit felt that it was necessary to physically be in proximity with her new clients in order to understand and assist them.
