Prejudice

Harmful Ignorance

By Misa FebrianiPublished about a year ago 2 min read

We are living in an age of confusion, where it's difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood. Everything is blurred, and information can spread easily. Anyone can talk or write about anything, even without specialized knowledge. News outlets, TV broadcasts, and social media channels all compete for viewers, prioritizing viewership and virality over the importance of the news itself. Not everyone is aware of this, however. For the older generation, many are uninterested in the rapid pace of change, opting for a peaceful and quiet retirement. For those who are part of this new era, however, not following trends can be seen as outdated and behind the times. However, this is a personal choice, and we should not force ourselves to worry about things that are not important to us. Participating without adequate knowledge can actually complicate matters. Spreading news without verifying its accuracy can lead to the proliferation of misinformation. If it involves someone's business or a public institution, it can cause harm to others, which is not a trivial matter.

Never underestimate the power of prejudice. We could be the ones accused. We may think we know what's true, but it may not be the case. We cannot judge the good or bad of a situation just because it's trending. It's important to compare information from different perspectives if it's useful to us. Check who is reporting the news and what their purpose is. Everything has a cause and effect that will influence each other like dominoes. We never know how news can have fatal consequences for others.

Be wise in delivering and listening to news. If the information is not useful to us, it's okay to ignore it. There's no need to join in on discussions about trending topics if we don't understand the context and purpose of the information. Even if we don't become famous, let's make sure we have good relationships with those around us. Let's be there not just physically but also emotionally. Let's be the real role models for our partners, parents, children, and closest friends. Being a person who is useful to them is their hope. Being there when they need us, living through every precious moment that cannot be repeated will create beautiful memories in our minds.
