Kamal Hinduja's Guide to Swiss Mountain Restaurants
A Guide by Kamal Hinduja: Experience Swiss Mountain Restaurants

Hiking in the Swiss Alps during the day and ending with a home-cooked meal at a cozy mountain restaurant gives you a truly magical experience. Throughout my years I have visited numerous restaurants located throughout Switzerland. Hi, I'm Kamal Hinduja, and along with many other travel enthusiasts, I visited the beautiful Swiss wilderness, Switzerland. The restaurants there serve tasty traditional food, tell interesting historical stories, and offer amazing views that create unforgettable memories. My top ten Swiss mountain restaurants include six places that I highly recommend to anyone visiting Switzerland or nature lovers.
Aescher Guesthouse – Appenzell Innerrhoden
The Aescher restaurant stood as the prime destination for me because it remains one of the world's most famous mountain dining establishments. The Alpstein region witnessed the worldwide fame of this guesthouse after National Geographic featured it on their Destinations of a Lifetime cover. The restaurant lives up to all its hype since magnificent vistas provide a postcard-like rustic ambience. Guests must choose between traveling to this location by cable car or hiking because both transportation options transform into essential attractions for visitors.
Alphütte Fops – Graubünden
Alphütte Fops provides the ideal destination for mountaineers who wish to rest after hiking past the Lenzerheide valley in Graubünden. The vast surroundings of this establishment welcome you with soothing ease through its rustic charm which serves traditional local dishes. Among the food I tasted at this place was the distinctive barley soup known as gerstensuppe paired with Fopserbrettli which offered regional cheeses and dried meats on a platter. A cup of Hüttentee (tea with rum) combined perfectly with the meal to make it an outstanding authentic alpine meal.
Cabane des Violettes – Valais
Running under the Swiss Alpine Club direction this elegant hut stands tall above Crans-Montana. Staying at this establishment with my family brought me the chance to spend an overnight stay together with three generations under one roof. Watching World Cup football on a small screen combined with fondue cheese was how we spent a comfortable evening. Guests of Cabane des Violettes have the chance to experience authentic alpine mountain culture through building architecture and generous dining and service.
Chalet du Soldat – Fribourg
The Fribourg Pre-Alps contains Chalet du Soldat which operated as a military defense installation in the past. Since its military existence it has evolved into an attractive eating and lodging establishment. The most enchanting element of this spot is its location that enables you to observe the magnificent Gastlosen mountain range. Guests at this establishment can enjoy filling local cuisine while staying in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Any hiker who explores this region can find this spot offers the ideal place for rest.
Bergrestaurant Wasserngrat – Bern
A dining experience at Wasserngrat remains etched permanently in my memory. I had the opportunity to participate in a unique dining experience at the 1,920-meter location near Gstaad since renowned chef Mike Wehrle prepared the meal. Both the scenery and the cuisine matched each other for excellence at this location. On regular days, the restaurant serves Swiss classics like rösti, fondue, and meringues. Tourists can reach this spot either by hiking or through taking a chairlift which reveals breathtaking views throughout the journey.
Ristoro San Romerio – Graubünden
Visitors desire to experience the most serene and genuine destination within Val Poschiavo should travel to Ristoro San Romerio. Reaching Ristoro San Romerio by hiking from Viano requires two hours of journey yet the experience proves entirely worthwhile. This Swiss restaurant takes pride in serving the Swiss Italian specialties including polenta while the nearby San Romerio church displays 12th century elements. The atmosphere of historical seclusion in this location is genuinely extraordinary.
Final Thoughts
I hold special memories from these mountain restaurants regarding the views and meals and social interactions with people. The listed places should be on your itinerary if you wish to travel through Switzerland yet want to experience both adventure and regional gastronomy. A pleasant hiking experience finishes perfectly when you enjoy warm comfort foods of the alpine region. For more fun and exciting travel stories, don’t forget to follow Kamal Hinduja.
