Chapter 31: Paris Revisited

We had done it. We had tricked Arabella Peel into spending her fortune on a dead piece of land. All that was left was to wait for the inevitable collapse of Peel Industries.

...

Uyai: What if it didn't work? What if Peel Industries doesn't go out of business?

June: Arabella is scheduled to make an announcement today. Have faith, Uyai.

We waited. And waited. And waited. Arabella Peel never showed. But late in the afternoon, one of her people arrived and affixed a sign to the gate.

Clue #1

June: "NOTICE: As of today, Peel Industries is under new ownership..." Arabella sold her mining interest!

Uyai: Is that good news? What if the new owner is just as reckless? I can't help but worry that we've traded the devil we know for something much worse.

Joseph: June, just the person I've been looking for. Did you hear? Peel Industries has been sold.

June: Yes, we just saw. But to whom?

Joseph: Take a look.

Clue #2

June: Peel Industries is now under the sole ownership of... Uyai Okafor. Joseph... how?

Joseph: With the money Arabella paid me for our take diamone mine. It was Uyai's land after all.

Uyai: Thank you, Joseph. And June. And Nicky. All of you.

Nicky: This was all your doing, Uyai. It was your idea to bring me here in the first place. You fought for what was important to you. You earned this.

...

We stayed a few more days in Sabaa to celebrate our victory. But Joseph and Nicky needed to return to Lagos, and I'd been gone from Virginia too long.

June: Joseph... is that your sister's truck?

Clue #3

June: Did you ever send your sister a message telling her where we left her truck?

Joseph: Oh dear. Hannah's going to kill me.

Hannah: Joseph Alexander Amadi. You had me worried sick. Someone found my truck abandoned on the roadside. I though you'd been eaten by tigers!

Joseph: Dear sister, there are no tigers in Africa.

Hannah: That wouldn't stop you from being eaten by one. I'm sure of it.

Nicky: Let us help you get your truck out of the mud.

Hannah: Oh, hello, Nicky. I'm so glad to see you are safe.

Nicky: I'm so sorry for all the worry I caused.

June: Let's hook up the truck to the horse and get it out of this mud.

Clue #4

A few good pulls and we had the truck back on the road.

Hannah: Thank you again for your help, June. And for looking after Joseph.

June: Oh, I think Joseph would have been just find without me.

Hannah: I know, but I do worry sometimes. He's head over heels for Nicky, you know.

June: Yes, I believe I do.

...

I spent two more days in Nigeria and then traveled to Paris to meet Amelia and Virginia. But no sooner had I arrived than I sensed something was wrong. Amelia had said she would meet me at the station, but she was nowhere to be seen. And whatever my dear friend's faults, she was rarely late, if ever. We had agreed to meet by the clock tower. So I went there to wait.

Clue #5

June: Okay, here's the clock. Where could you be, Amelia?

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty minutes I waited. But there was no sign of them. That nagging feeling that sometime awful had happened was at full force. After twenty minutes, I started to worry. I hunted down the nearest phone booth, hoping to call Amelia and find out what had happened.

Clue #6

Imagine my surprise when it was Amelia who emerged from the booth.

Amelia: June! Oh God, June, I'm so sorry. I've lost Virginia! She was right there with me, and then she was gone.

June: What do you mean, gone? Surely she's around here somewhere.

Amelia: No, no she's not. It's been hours. She knew where we were supposed to meet.

June: All right. We have to retrace your steps. Where did you last see her?

...

Amelia: We were right here! We were shopping for a present for you!

June: It's okay. Virginia is a resilient young woman. She can certainly handle herself. Let's look around and see if there is any clue where she went.

Clue #7

June: Oh no...

Amelia: Is that blood? Oh God, June. I'm so sorry. You have every right to hate me.

June: Hush. We don't know whose blood it is. Let's not worry until we have to.

Of course, I was terrified. But I knew I had to keep a clear head to find Virginia.

Amelia: So what do we do now?

June: We take a deep breath and keep looking.

Clue #8

June: Hold on a minute. Amelia? This feather...

Amelia: It's a quail feather.

June: Where have I seen it before? Wait, I know. That arrogant peacock, Silvio Santini!

Amelia: Oh God, that ridiculous hat of his. You don't think he had something to do with Virginia's disappearance?

June: I think we should pay him a visit, just to be sure.

...

June: So you never told what happened after we swapped Silvio's paintings for the forgeries.

Amelia: Oh, you know, the police took him in for questioning, but they couldn't prove anything. He became a laughingstock though. His reputation is ruined.

June: This is his house?

Clue #9

June: Looks as if Chez Silvio has seen better days. It's for sale.

Amelia: Do you think that's why he kidnapped Virginia? We exposed him as a fraud, got him arrested for forgery, and now he wants revenge?

June: We don't know that he did anything yet.

But the thought had crossed my mind.

Amelia: If Silvio's done anything to Virginia, I'll kill him with my bare hands.

I was about to remind Amelia once more that we had no proof Silvio had done anything. But then I looked up and saw something that stopped me in my tracks.

Clue #10

June: Look! In the window! Those two figures. It's Silvio... and Virginia!

Amelia: What's he doing? We have to help her!
