Chapter 29: Diamonds and Deeds
We had found diamonds while we were trapped Arabella Peel's coal mine. If Arabella found out they were there, she would never leave the village. We needed to come up with a plan.
...
Nicky: June, Uyai! Thank goodness you're okay! When I heard the explosions, I feared the worst.
June: We're fine. But how did this happen?

June: A detonator. "Property of Peel Industries." The last shift was over. So who set off the blast?
Uyai: And why would they cave in the mine like that?
June: What if Arabella wanted to make it look like sabotage? She could blame the villagers and make herself look like the victim. Nicky, we have another problem besides the sabotage.
Nicky: What do you mean?
June: We found diamonds while we were down in the mine.
Nicky: Diamonds? But I thought it was just a coal mine?
June: Exactly. The diamonds increase the mine's value astronomically. If Arabella Peel knows they're down there, we'll never get rid of her.

June: Flashlights. Mrs. Peel's security must be checking the mine.
Uyai: If they see me, they'll blame me for the blast. They'll accuse me of sabotage.
June: Then we have to get you out of here. Where would you be safe?
Uyai: My family owns a piece of land in the hills. I can go there. Let's hurry.
...
Uyai and I made our way to her family's land.
June: This is pretty far out from the village. How long has it been in the family?
Uyai: My uncle bought it. He had big plans to set up a mine.

June: The mine looks abandoned. I guess those plans fell through?
Uyai: Yeah. The guy who sold the mine to my uncle promised it was rich land. But there's nothing down there. Not even coal.
June: Hmm. But the equipment and everything is still here... Uyai, what if we could convince Mrs. Peel to buy this land?
Uyai: What do you mean? How would that help?
June: Well, I have an idea, but first we need to make this look like a real mine.

June: We could turn this house into a mining office.
Uyai: I'm not following. Why would we do that?
June: What if we could make Arabella sell the mine in the village in order to buy this one? If she thought there were diamonds here, she would be willing to pay a very high price.
Uyai: She would trade in her fortune for a worthless pile of rocks. Brilliant.
...
Uyai stayed on her uncle's land and I went back to the village to meet Nicky and Joseph.
Nicky: June, we have to put a stop to this now. I'm fighting a losing battle.
Joseph: The villagers aren't going to get better as long as this mine is operating.

What little medicine Nicky had was running out. We had to act on the plan quickly, so I filled Nicky and Joseph in.
Nicky: June, are you sure you can pull this off?
June: I think so. If we all pull together.
Joseph: I'm in. What do you need me to do?
June: The last conversation me and Nicky had with Arabella didn't end well. She won't believe us if we tell her there are diamonds in the other mine.
Joseph: What if I pretended to be the wealthy owner of the mine? I could approach Arabella with a business proposition. Convince her to buy it.
June: That's a great idea.
Nicky: Erm, June? Someone's coming.

June: It's Arabella. What's she doing here in the village?
Nicky: We have to act quickly. Joseph, are you ready?
Joseph: Yes. It's better if she doesn't see us together. You'll have to distract her. Lead her to the center of the village and I'll meet you there.
...
Arabella: I'm sure you heard there was an attack on my mine, Miss Parker. It's the villagers. They're all stirred up about these rumors you've been spreading. They're practically in revolt! Look at all this commotion!

Joseph had gathered a group of villagers. He was putting on a good show.
Joseph: This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Trust me, you do not want to pass this up.
Arabella: Whatever is he talking about? More nonsense to rile up the locals?
June: No, he's a businessman. I met him on the boat here. He said something about a mine in the hills.
Arabella: You said this man has a mine nearby? Why haven't I heard of this?
June: He comes from Lagos. He just acquired the mine.
Arabella: I see. Competition. I need to know more about this man.
June: What's that?

June: It's a map. Looks like it shows the way to the mine.
Arabella: How careless of him to leave it behind. But his carelessness works in my favor. Hmm. The mine's up in the hills. I didn't think there was anything of value up there. The man went into the stables. I must talk to him before he leaves.
...
We caught up to Joseph in the stables. He had seen Arabella take the bait.
Joseph: Can I help you?
Arabella: Why, yes. My name is Arabella Peel. I run the largest mining concern in my area. I hear you're my new competition, Mr...?
Joseph: Amadi. And I wouldn't say I'm your competition. You mine coal, I understand?
Arabella: Oh, so you're not in the coal mining business?

We had brought the pouch of diamonds we found in Arabella's mine. Joseph pretended to hide it. And Arabella noticed, exactly as we intended.
Arabella: My word, are these diamonds? Spectacular quality, too.
Joseph: Just a sample I brought up from my mine. There are many more.
Arabella's eyes grew wide. We had her right where we wanted her.
Arabella: Mr. Amadi, you wouldn't be interested in selling the mine, would you?
Joseph: Oh, I don't know. I stand to become very wealthy.
Arabella: Please, name your price.

Joseph jotted a number down on paper. The zeroes were dizzying.
Arabella: Oh my, that's a very large number.
Joseph: I understand if you can't afford it.
Arabella: No. No, I'll have to sell the other operation to raise the capital, but it'll be worth it. I just need to see the mine first, of course.
Joseph: Of course. Come with me.
