Chapter 32: Silvio's Lament

Virginia had found Silvio in distress and tried to help him. We talked him away from the window and tried to calm him down. Silvio began to tell us just how much trouble he was in.

Silvio: Why did you stop me? You should have let me plummet to my death!

June: Don't be ridiculous. You're only saying that because you're drunk. We need to find something to sober you up.

Clue #1

June: Drink this. It'll help.

Silvio: I don't need coffee. I need the sweet oblivion that only whiskey can provide! My life went down the drain after you planted those forgeries in my exhibition. I used to be respected and now I'm a joke!

Amelia: Still as dramatic as ever, I see, Silvio.

Virginia: I think there's more to it than that. I think there's something he's not telling us.

June: Silvio, talk to us. The forgery scandal was months ago. Surely everyone's forgotten it by now. What's really going on?

Silvio: I have become the victim of the vilest of scoundrels! Someone's out to get me. See for yourself.

Clue #2

June: This is blackmail. Silvio, who is this from?

Silvio: Oh, what do you care? And it doesn't matter. I don't have the money to pay them. I'm going to be ruined--I'm better off dead!

Silvio was insufferable, but he was talking about ending his life. I couldn't ignore that.

Amelia: June, can I talk to you outside, please?

...

Amelia: Look, whatever mess Silvio's got himself into, it's his problem.

Virginia: But it sounds like he's really in trouble.

Amelia: May I remind you who we're dealing with?

Clue #3

The Piazza of Love. A leftover poster from Silvio's exhibition. It advertised the painting he'd stolen. That he tried to take credit for.

Amelia: This is Silvio. He stole from an old man and left an innocent kid to rot in jail. He stops at nothing to get what he wants. If someone's after him, I bet he had it coming.

Virginia: Silvio paid for what he did, Amelia. We exposed the truth. We made sure everyone knew he was a fraud. He's obviously still reeling from it all. Just look at the mess he's in.

Clue #4

June: Auction tags. Looks like he's selling his belongings. To pay off the blackmailer, perhaps. Virginia's right, Amelia. Silvio has paid his dues. I know he's an ass, but we don't want to see him get hurt.

Amelia: Fine. Have it your way. So how do we help Silvio?

June: That blackmail letter reminded me of someone. Remember Rene?

Amelia: You mean the weasel who tried to blackmail me? There's an idea. Let's talk to him.

...

Silvio's old gallery had been turned into a bank. Lucky for us, Rene still worked there.

June: Rene Baudin. Just the man I was looking for.

Rene: Miss Parker? What are you doing here?

June: Silvio is being blackmailed and the letter reminded me of your handiwork. Know anything?

Rene: No. I swear. I gave all that up.

Clue #5

June: Hmm. He's telling the truth. His handwriting doesn't match the blackmail letter.

Rene: I told you it wasn't me. Not after that fiasco with the paintings. In fact, I really should be thanking you. You scared me straight.

June: Well, someone is blackmailing Silvio. And he's pretty shaken up about it.

Rene: Silvio does have a knack for ticking people off, doesn't he? I remember reading about some incident at the jewelry store where he works now. I think I still have the paper here somewhere.

Clue #6

June: "Jewelry Store Robbery on the Rue de Passy." Silvio was working here?

Rene: Last I heard. It could just be a coincidence...

Amelia: But this is Silvio we're talking about.

June: Sounds like he didn't tell us the whole story. Let's pay him another visit.

...

Silvio: Goodbye, my Rosewood dining set. So long, Rococo bureau. Oh, and the Chippendale! I can't bear to see it all being shipped away.

June: What's that on the desk?

Clue #7

June: A ruby necklace. Is this yours, Silvio?

Silvio: Give me that! It wasn't supposed to be in there.

Amelia: This is a nice piece. Wouldn't happen to be from the store you worked at, would it?

Silvio: I see you found out about the robbery. I suppose I might as well confess. When the thief came sniffing around, I suspected they were planning something. So I offered to help out. For a price, of course.

June: So you arranged to help the thief rob the jewelry store. Then what?

Silvio: The jewelry was worth so much, you see. Much more than our deal. And, well, in the heat of the moment... I decided to keep a few things for myself.

Amelia: Oh, Silvio.

Silvio: A penthouse in Paris doesn't come for free, darling! But now the thief's angry. Really angry.

Clue #8

June: It's a threat. "Return what's mine or pay the ultimate price."

Silvio: I can't. I already sold most of the jewelry to pay off my debts.

Virginia: And the thief? Who is he?

Silvio: She. It was a woman. But she wouldn't tell me her name.

June: Okay, Silvio. I think you should come to Amelia's studio. I have an idea.

...

June: You say you got a good look at the thief, Silvio?

Silvio: Yes. She was rather striking, actually.

June: Good. Amelia will be able to draw a sketch based on your description.

Virginia: And then we'll know who we're looking for.

Clue #9

Amelia listened carefully to Silvio and began to sketch the thief. She drew an older woman with sharp features, dark hair... It wasn't until she finished the eyes that I recognized the cold stare looking up at us. Virginia saw it too.

Virginia: The Marquess.

Amelia: The Marquess? June, who is this woman?

June: She's a con artist. My mother's former partner in crime. And she's deadly. She even shot at Virginia while we were in Monaco.

Amelia: Sounds like Silvio is in way over his head.

Virginia: I bet Grandma would know what to do.

June: That's good thinking, Virginia. But we don't know where she is.

Clue #10

The newspaper amongst Amelia's things gave me an idea.

June: Every morning, first thing, Mother used to read the classified section. I wonder if she still has that habit...
