Chapter 36: June's Debut
It's not every day that you see yourself, or at least the body of someone who looks exactly like you, dead before your very eyes. It was unsettling. I was determined to find out what happened.
Jack: Oh my God...Louise! What happened?
June: We found her in the water tank. It looks like she drowned.
Jack: Drowned? How? Was it murder?
June: We don't know. We found a lot of bottles in her dressing room. Maybe she'd been drinking.

June: Cigarette butts. It looks like someone was standing here chain smoking.
Jack: Huh. Wonder where they went. Do you think they saw something?
June: If they did, why would they take off? It's a little suspicious.
I wanted to follow up on the possible eyewitness. But the police arrived and took over. They went over everything Virginia and I had seen just before we discovered the body. All the while, I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

June: A man lurking around the set. I couldn't quite make out his face. I wonder who that is...
Jack: June, I know you want to find out what happened. But maybe just let the police handle this one. How about I take you and Virginia to lunch? We can all take our minds off of this.
...
Jack: This place has the best pancakes in town! Are you hungry?
June: Sounds wonderful. I'll try the blueberry.
Jack was right. I needed to let the police handle Louise's death.
Virginia: Aunt June, look over there. Is that who I think it is?

June: Dexter? Are you all right?
Dexter: No. Louise is dead. There's no understudy. We're way past schedule. The production's ruined!
Jack: Dexter, there's got to be something we can do to save the production. We'll find a replacement for Louise.
Dexter: Who? Who are we going to find at such short notice?
I watched as Dexter poured something into his cup.

June: Bourbon. It's a little early, isn't it?
Dexter: What's your point?
Jack: Hang on, Dexter. You need a replacement... what about June?
June: Wait, I'm not an actress. I don't think it's a good idea.
Jack: Come on, you'll practically be playing yourself. It's perfect.
...
I don't know how Jack managed to talk me into it, but the next day I was on set.
Virginia: Aunt June! Are you ready? In this scene you pull the murder weapon from the alligator's mouth.

June: Impressive teeth. But I don't care if it's a fake -- I'm not getting near this thing.
Virginia: But you'll have a prop arm! You'll be perfectly safe.
June: How do you know all this?
Virginia: It's in the script. Which you really should have read, by the way. You have lots of lines to learn, Aunt June.
Dexter: Are we ready? We're burning daylight, people. Places!
As I got into place, I was distracted by someone I thought I recognized.

Dexter: Cut! What are you looking at? You're supposed to walk over to the alligator!
June: Who's that man over there?
Dexter: Charlie Miller, what the hell are you doing here? I thought Milton fired you!
June: Excuse me, Dexter. I'll be back in a bit.
...
There was something suspicious about Charlie Miller. Why was he on the set if he'd been fired? Did he have something to do with Louise's death? I decided to follow him and find out.
June: This looks like Charlie's locker.

June: A blueprint of the film sets. These are pretty elaborate sketches. This is the set where Louise died. Why does Charlie have this?
Charlie: None of your business. Get out of my locker. I've seen you on set. You're the one the movie's about. The so-called lady detective.
June: The name's June Parker. I'm looking into the death of Louise Davis.
Charlie: What makes you think I had anything to do with that?
June: You've been acting a little suspicious. Is it true that you were fired?
Charlie: Yeah, but that had nothing to do with Louise. Take a look.

June: Union papers. You're trying to start a union?
Charlie: Yeah. The film set is a death trap. I broke my arm in three place last year. An accident like what happened to Louise has been a long time coming.
June: So you're sure it was an accident?
Charlie: Seems likely to me.I can show you the set, if you want.
...
June: So, what makes this a death trap?
Charlie: Take your pick. The ropes are old, the wood's cheap. Bad construction.
June: This trap door. What normally holds it shut?
Charlie: A rope, but it could have snapped when Louise stepped on it.
June: Where's the rope?

June: Is this it?
Charlie: Yeah... but this rope has been cut.
June: Are you sure?
Charlie: Pretty sure. When a rope snaps, it frays. But this is a clean break.
June: So it looks like it wasn't an accident after all.
Charlie: All right, if this wasn't an accident, what happened here?
June: I think someone knew Louise would stand on that trap door. They cut the rope on purpose.
Charlie: You're saying someone wanted to kill Louise? Why?
June: I don't know yet. Wait, do you smell smoke?

June: That's a lot of smoke! Is something on fire?
Charlie: Looks like it's coming from over by the plantation film set. I know a shortcut. Follow me.
June: The set's on fire!
Charlie: We have to put it out!
June: This fire's going to spread fast. We have to stop it. Wow, that was close. The whole set almost caught alight.
Charlie: June, check it out. A trail of burned grass.
June: It's leading to the trailer. Let's take a closer look.
...
June: An empty matchbox. Pretty suspicious.
Charlie: I suppose it could just be a coincidence...
June: Used matches. But is it enough to prove arson?
Charlie: I don't know. I think we need to find whatever fuelled the fire.
June: Gasoline! We have our proof. Now we have to find out who the trailer belongs to.
Dexter: There he is! Arrest him!
Charlie: What! What for?
Dexter: Trespassing. Sabotage. Murder. Take your pick.
Dexter had brought the police. Before I could say anything, they took Charlie away.
