Sketches of the building looked like austere and harmonious lines drawn by a composer. The clean space between them bewitched the eye. She wore a deep purple suit that made her look like a juicy plumb.
Loreen looked over the plans with the architect and chief engineer Braun Dorn and Bob Cater, respectively. The former looked like a baseball player, below average height and held in his gaze two decades of experience. Cater was no slouch. He’d been a welder, plumber, and even worked as a longshoreman for wix years
“Are you sure you want to get in the business of retail stores?” Goodell Cain asked.
“If I wasn’t, I would be standing here, would I?”
Goodell stepped away slightly almost as a reflex.
“We’re going to do this and show that minimum wage and licensing laws must be struck from the government’s record now and forevermore.”
“Wouldn’t that be unfair?”
“To whom?” she queried.
“Well…to everybody. If we open these stores with no regs, we might as well be setting up for a bloody mess. As a matter of fact, licensing laws and minimum wages protect people.”
“Yes, in the same way that people are priced out of the job field under minimum wage codes and licensing laws inhibit skilled workers from obtaining gainful employment because the certification process costs so much.”
“Mrs. Breen….” Dorn lamented.
“If we have to wait for those bureaucrats to change their minds, so be it.”
“So scrap this plan until the wonders of the world convene and decree these laws?”
“If that is in our days, so be it. Si be it.”
Braun and Dorn looked at each other with a mix of brewing anger and astonishment approaching utter awe.
“We’ll just keep this ‘til that day comes. When it does, we'll act.”
