Utterances

Mutterings into an old cassette player played back as Statist sat in his wheelchair. It was the same old rhetoric; he used his powers for the good of the state instead of the people.

The electronic whir from his chair became drowned out by the tape recording. He punched the play button to hear his own voice, dripping with derision and spite. Somehow, it also had a sickly sweet ring to it. That’s why he could get away with his forceful nature all of these years.

He picked up a stack of papers and murmured some more. Like an ascetic memorizing scrolls, he hunched over and recalled all of his notes and put them into the recorder.

His rage and bluster kicked up and the once docile old man became a brute. He’d always been an ogre, but he hid it with simple pleasures and trinkets twinkling with a smile of glee. Now, he had nothing but bile to offer.

He ripped through the pages and expelled the cassette tape from its player. In his mind, he thought he was doing the right thing. He found a pencil, new stationery, and another cassette tape. He placed it back into the machine and began muttering again.

After this session of utterances he spoke clearly, resoundingly pristine. With the power of his voice booming out, it was a shake that his speech had been so eloquent and toxic at the same time.

For Statist to be a reigning champion for all the bloodshed over the millenia showed that he never lost his power. It was a hollow one, but one that no one had yet been able to break.

The collectivists adored Statist because he was the embodiment of their expressions.

He muttered some more and then the voice boomed. Another hit.
