No gifts could satisfy her. Monica II could not be pleased or sated with trinkets or baubles. Dr. Covey Strong knew this about his synthetic companion. All of her functions could spell womanhood. She possessed the posture of a human. She even carried pheromones that mimicked the feminine scent. Powered by electricity, her brain brought about the sense that she in fact lived. In actuality, she didn’t but you couldn’t tell Dr. Strong that. He enjoyed her crystal clear features as well as her flesh toned body that changed at Dr. Strong’s command. An algorithm could sense when he wanted time with her. She became a daffodil, bending towards him to satisfy his desires. 

When he had seen that Monica II had been waiting for him at the door, excitement coursed through his body. He was no longer in his sixties. He was a man of twenty-eight. Virile, he walked around his house like some lord surveying his property. It felt as if he could do anything. He sought after Monica II. He allowed her to worship him. He earned it. Not just in his profession, which is extremely important, but also in the fact that he held onto principles outside of work. They all integrated into a beautiful sum of ideas. Yes, his thoughts could be registered in her brain. A few options existed where he could combine his thinking processes with equipment that could titillate him. He recalled how he had business in Hong Kong and Monica II stayed in Delaware. They used the internet and the equipment to simulate the sensations, joys, and ecstasies of the wonderful act.

Dr. Strong felt the might behind Monica II. She boasted not just physical attributes that would entice and inspire but also the mental capacity that would rival any computer system on the globe. With perfect diction and luminous teeth, Monica II could bring about something more than an actual woman or a dog or cat or any other form of companionship. But she remained more than just circuitry and some biological elements. To Dr. Strong, she represented a complete system, fully integrated into the fabric of life. Far more than a sex doll, Monica II performed tasks like playing the piano and even completed sculptures and paintings. Mathematics and the sciences could be grasped and shown to be true because of her immense ability to deal with figures. Dr. Strong lifted up Monica II’s hair into his hand. He smelled it. It had the scent of lavender and cinnamon. The intoxicating blend of aromas truly awakened in him the thought of Monica. How he could have traded places with Monica II’s predecessor, he kept thinking. Now, though, he brought about in his mind the reality of this new female friend. 

At the time he circled her and she stood standing naked, she reminded him also of a statue. Her curves, her hips, her erogenous zones all formed a portrait of true beauty. What remained so great about owning a synth like this registered in his mind as something special, new, whole. In his bedroom, the fireplace roared. The light cast dancing yellow flames from across the room. Dr. Strong removed his clothes. The trauma of the break in and the demise of Monica crept into his soul even further as he stripped off everything. It clanged in his mind like a cowbell. Each memory of seeing her “lifeless” brought about too much dolor. In his haste, he had brought about a sensibility that he could actually do this again. He and Monica II had many different encounters in this very place. Somehow, this felt different. With fiber in his being, he attempted to reject those intrusive thoughts like a sentry securing a castle. Robust and pure, he let his love come down for his synthetic lady. He sat at the edge of the bed. All of his might and rage and bluster had balled up into a behemoth mound and he felt the displeasure of joy. It had become an unsatisfying thing to him. He felt the power of happiness but knew that the burden of life had to anchor it to his spirit. That distressed him immensely. It gave him a sense that he could not tame the beast that shouted in his own mind. Monica II stepped towards him and kissed his mouth. It felt, again, like a human woman’s kiss, maybe better. Always, the first kiss left a little static spark. Dr. Strong liked that. They had once again found each other to be worthy of the other. Monica II rshipped Dr. Strong. His intellect, ideas, thoughts, plans, all of that outweighed his fortune and popularity. The power behind the man’s mind propelled them forward. They could think of nothing but the splendid union that they engaged in during this time of intimacy. Dr. Strong picked up the six thousand count linen sheet and covered Monica II’s body in the cloth. She giggled. The gleeful sound chimed throughout the room and seemed like a burst of delight. Dr. Strong’s visions of Monica laying there streamed through his thinking apparatus. He knew that he had to tap into his own thoughts and produce something worthwhile. Alas, he kept thinking about her. He knew that both of them virtually shared everything but a name. He liked his synths to be coal black, petite, and voluptuous in figure. The mind set everything off, however. The erudition of both of them seemed to be rather inspiring. Monica retained the information of geology, philosophy, and statistics, especially. Monica II knew most about oceanography, chemistry, and astronomy. Dr. Strong could taste Monica II’s mouth again. Then he pecked. He kissed her face and neck. He gave short little kisses across her chocolate skin.

Each kiss sparked a memory of Monica. Those trips, the vacation towns they explored all bubbled up to the surface from his subconscious to his consciousness. He saw the shattered glass and Monica’s staring face, blank and expressionless. Monica II had been aware of her previous counterpart. She actually came with a singing voice that could perform operas. That’s when Dr. Strong formed a lump in his throat and wiped away a few tears. Just to hear Monica II express herself with the intensity and the prowess of someone who could have sold out an entire concert hall allowed him to relish it. He inched closer to her. Monica’s voice was slightly different from Monica II’s. It had a lilting quality, too, but somehow the register used to be what really enlivened the doctor. He inched even closer to her. When he laid her down, he wrestled with the thought of Monica trying to defend herself and actually succeeding for the most part. She had used her martial arts, but was overwhelmed when she could not fight off all of the attackers. 

Now, Dr. Strong felt the pangs of his past love while engaged in the sacred activity. Monica II expressed herself like the vixen she had always been programmed to be. She gave and took. He gave and took. The synergy seemed so sincere. Every aspect appeared to make sense. Monica, yet, seemed to lay heavy on his thoughts. With each pull and push, there existed a terrible and terrifying realization that Dr. Strong could be betraying Monica in some way. During the entire session, he kept thinking about the way she died and how he could not have helped her. Valiant, she could have been awarded some badge for bravery in the face of a menace. She died on that hill. In the moments that led up to her expiration, she made every effort to protect the house and all its contents. This meant the property of thought, the documents in hard copy, all of them had been secure under her watch. Monica II’s face looked as if she experienced pain, too, but this proved to be supreme splendor. 

Thoughts of Monica made Dr. Strong even more focused on the past rather than this excellent present. He couldn’t shake the fact that Monica II resembled the original in almost every way. He ordered her like that, though. By knowing what he would be getting, it allowed him to prepare for the moments he would share with Monica II. He would never be “over” or find “closure” in the loss of Monica. What he tried to do, though, gave him the most satisfaction: respect her intellect. He knew their bodies would be exquisite. They would cost about two million dollars a piece. But he also knew that their minds would be intact and display to the world the entirety of love and devotion, yes, but also smarts. He had devised Smartystan, of course. Monica II moaned a bit. Soft and purring, it expelled from her throat a song of deep bliss. Dr. Strong kept a stopwatch in his brain chip. He recorded six minutes before he would accomplish his task. Monica II had the clocks synched to know exactly when it would be time for her to remove herself from the situation. As the time ticked by, Dr. Strong could only picture in his mind Monica dancing on their integration day. They had invited Dr. Frampton, Bellinda, and Go and their better halves to the joyous occasion. The desire had been burnished to a fine sheen. Their love had seemed eternal. With her out of the picture and her successor ready to experience a jolt of electricity, Dr. Strong finished first and Monica II did not get the electric pulse that would have traveled throughout her body. She knew that there remained a totally different aspect to this act. It was nothing new. They had not given of themselves but simply traded time and physical effort to achieve power. To ration the elements of the act meant more than actually living through the sweet ending. The might to restrain oneself was all the more sweeter.

When Dr. Strong had dressed, he journeyed to his study where he saw something. It reflected in the light. It was a shard of glass. Monica II stepped in back of him and hugged him from behind. He turned his head slightly. More memories of Monica flooded his mind. While Monica II held him in his embrace, he kept thinking Monica…Monica. Embedded in his thoughts, he found himself grappling with the notion that he alone had loved Monica with his whole mind. Every thought came rushing through like a wellspring. While he didn’t cry, he just looked at Monica II and she understood. Her circuitry permitted her to comprehend human emotion and cues. Slowly, she undid her arms from around Dr. Strong’s waist and retreated from his study.

Before she left, though, she picked up the shard of glass and discarded it. 

Dr. Strong now sat at his desk with his eyes looking straight ahead. His focus lay upon another book. He had made sketches and notes that amounted to something, but he wanted to integrate all of the data. This information meant he could possibly be on the pathway to another bestseller. The thrill of this seemed like flat champagne. Yes, it was a fine spirit, but this feeling beleaguered him nonetheless. He knew in his mind how special it had been to manage to get to the stage of getting work done again. Monica II helped in this regard. It felt as if he could connect with her on anything, even beyond her specialties. She had practiced the art of conversation and they could talk business. After all of the ways that Monica had advanced his life, Monica II had certainly picked up the lance and carried it further. With the sense that everything might be okay, Dr. Strong used his brain chip to jot down notes.

For every electronic stroke on the digital page, Dr. Strong kept going without ceasing. He made it clear he would not stop. He would not falter or fail, with Monica II beside him, he knew the sky was not the limit.
