Two Swings on a Playground / Angelita's Return

Jack’s Journal Entry
Saturday, October 30, 1982
It’s 7:43 a.m., and I just woke up a few minutes ago. It’s a hazy, drizzly, gloomy morning, but the bright spot is that my Angelita is coming home today. Special Agent Cole will be dropping her off at her house around noon. Her mom is making a homecoming lunch of enchiladas, potato salad, and chips with guacamole and salsa. I couldn't be more excited to have my babe back.
It’s been three and a half agonizing months since I last saw her. She was mad at me before she disappeared. I’m sure everything will be alright, but I can’t shake this nervous feeling. Will she still love me? Will all of this change her? Will she even recognize me? Of course, she’ll recognize me—but you never know.
I’m going to dress sharp for her homecoming. I’ll pull out the patent leathers, the gold cufflinks, and my best tie.
The Drive to Angelita’s House
“Mom!” Jack shouted before stepping out the front door. “I’m leaving for Angelita’s now. I’m gonna stop by Visser’s Florist to pick up a dozen red roses for her. She loves red roses. I’ll be back later tonight.”
Before Sheryl could respond, Jack dashed outside, jumped into his Ford Mustang, and cranked up the radio. Singing along, he belted out the lyrics:
🎶 I like it here with my childhood friend, Here they come, those feelings again! Who can it be now? Who can it be now? 🎶
Jack enjoyed his stroll through Vissers and picked out a beautiful bouquet of red roses for his sweetheart. As a special touch, he also bought a snow-white teddy bear with a red ribbon around its neck. A small heart hung from the ribbon, embroidered with the word LOVE.
He arrived at Angelita’s house at 11:40 a.m. and helped prepare for her arrival. He hung multicolored streamers from the ceiling in the living room and placed a banner that read, Welcome Home, Angelita.
Angelita’s Arrival
"They just arrived—she just got out of the car," Angelita’s mother announced.
Everyone gathered in the living room near the front door, a mix of family and friends—twelve in total. Jack stood front and center beside Angelita’s mother, his anticipation growing by the second.
Unable to wait any longer, he stepped outside. There she was, standing by Agent Cole’s car, holding a suitcase.
"Angelita, my darling!" Jack called out.
She looked up, her eyes locking onto his, and let go of her suitcase. Without hesitation, they ran toward each other, meeting in a tight embrace. Tears welled in both their eyes as they held on, savoring the long-awaited moment.
The rest of the family and friends gathered in the front yard, watching the emotional reunion unfold.
Jack’s Surprise
“Angelita, let’s take a walk.”
“But everybody is waiting for us.”
“The party can wait. We’ll be back in 20 minutes. That’ll give your mom enough time to finish setting up the food.”
Jack waved to everyone in the front yard and called out, “We’ll be back in 20 minutes!”
He led Angelita around the block to the local elementary school playground.
They sat on the swings, gently swaying back and forth.
“Angelita, it’s so nice to have you back home.”
“It’s nice to be back, Jack.”
Jack stepped off his swing and took hold of Angelita’s, stopping her movement. Standing close, he spoke softly.
“I thought about you every day, my love. With each day you were gone, I fell in love with you even more. I could see your beautiful brown eyes in my mind, but there was a sadness in them. I knew that if you ever came back home, I would do whatever it takes to take that sadness away.”
He gazed deeply into her eyes. “They’re even more beautiful than I remember. My love for you is endless.” Jack took a deep breath and knelt before her. “Angelita, my love, will you be my wife?”
