Why the sex? And why is he white?

A rant about the trailer of the movie "The wuthering heights"

By Joana PiresPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

Hello, hello

I really like reading. And last year in Portugal there was this very beautifull collection of classics being sold. All of them hardcover, with drawings and very classical looking covers. So, I bought some of them (my parents did cof cof). I wanted to read some classical literature and almost all of the writers of the books were women so it sounded like a great opportunity. One of books that I loved the most was The "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Brontë. I read the book so fast and was trying to convinve everyone around me to read it to.

Why did I enjoy it/ and a bit about the story

The seeting of the book, this remote place where your only chances are to live like a ermite or try to have a relationship with your neighboor that obviously doesn't want to have a relationship with you. The characters that look and act like they are living in a state almost of madness. The peeling of layers when one nice old lady starts to explain to you how everything started, how it wasn't like this before, while tucking you in bed and making sure you are warm and comfortable.

Now, I lovee when the characters are awful. Or at least have very obvious flaws. This is a gothic romance but for me is also a tale of vengeance. Let me explain.

Cathy's father had a property, the Wuthering Heigts and when he returns from one of his travels he brings a gift. A boy that he took out of the streets that he names Heathcliff. He was treatred badly by almost everyone in that house for being poor and having a darker skin tone. Cathy, the youngest daughter liked Heathclif and they played together a lot. One day while walking together both Cathy and Heathcliff find another property with two brothers. While making fun of them Cathy is bitten by a dog and stays in that house to recover. When she returns she is not the same young girl, she thinks very highly of herself and her friendship with Heathclif is never the same.

And this is the beggining of the love and hate relationship between Cathy and Heatcliff, full of "you are my true love but I can't stay with you" and "I hate you for abandoning me". There is also a desire of being wanted by your love, it's such a good book I love it!

I won't say much more because I want you to go read the book to feel everything that I felt while reading. Now, if you don't like more dark characters (temper wise. not skin tone. See the joke that I did there?) and sad endings. Not a book for you. Now, onto my opinion of the trailer and upcoming movie.

WTF was that?

When I heard that they were making a movie I was thrilled! Then the casting came out. Margot Robbie was Cathy, I wasn't thrilled but hey, maybe some makeup and hair and it could work. And then, Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. What? Nothing against Jacob by the way. But, Heathcliff can't be white. Like I told you, the reason for the mistreatment he receives stems from is skin tone. That already made me scared, and I stayed scared when the trailer came out.

What... was... that...? Look, we can argue that there was sexual tension between Cathy and Heatcliff. Sure. I felt like I was watching a soft porn.

And that makes me wonder. Why does eevrything needs to be sexual this days? Im not a prude, sex is great. But I feel like now sex is being thrown onto our faces in everything. I can't watch a TVshow without seeing boobs or ass. I like it when it's done in a tastefull way and when it makes sense. For exemple, in the TVshow Interview with a vampire. Great show, love it go watch. In this case, i felt uneasy. While we can debate that it would be interesting to portray a sexual tension, it takes away of the core of the relationship between these two. Even though they are bad they love each other because they are the same bad, and are the only ones that can understand each other.

So, to conclude

Not watching the movie. Atleast not legally. There is a theory that the movie is actually about a woman that reads the book and starts having fantasies about Heathcliff. If that's the case, maybeee I will watch it. Maybe. In the end, I just want movie producers to leave books alone, and creat something original.

Do you agree? Will you watch the movie? Let me know.
