Astronomical Phenomena Known to Astronomers

Before the Invention of Telescope

Do you know about the astronomical phenomena known to astronomers? So what is the evidence of this discovery? Will you understand the different phenomena known to astronomers?

In this modern age, we know everything around us because there are suitable tools or gadgets used to study or analyze such an event or phenomenon. For example, the telescope is one of the tools invented by mankind, which is very useful in studying the universe. However, although there were no telescopes in ancient times, they were still able to discover some astronomical phenomena like the circular movement of the sun in the sky. They noticed that the sun rises from the East and sets in the West. Now, what are the five astronomical phenomena known to astronomers before the invention of the telescope?

The first is the sides of the Moon. The ancients observed the shape and path of the Moon. The change in 29.5 days. They observed that the Moon changed shape from a thin semicircular disk to a full round disk. The periodic change of the Moon's sides was the basis of the ancient calendar.

Second is the lunar eclipse. One of the things that attracted the attention of the ancients was the time in a month when the Moon or part of it appeared to be covered by darkness for a brief moment, a phenomenon like this is called a lunar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is of course when the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun, the Earth passes through a shadow on the Moon.

Third is the solar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth and the Moon partially or completely covers the Sun, this causes temporary darkness during the day, so the ancients feared eclipses because they were associated with God's wrath. Astronomers noticed that the position of the constellations in the night sky changed depending on the time of the year. It was also observed that the stars tended to stick to a backup celestial body. It moved around an axis in a day. That is how the stars move.

Fourth, the fifth phenomenon was the ability to see planets. They noticed that some stars in the sky were relatively brighter than the rest. The distant stars seemed to be fixed in their positions but these stars changed their positions periodically, therefore the Greeks called them Wanderers or Planets. These wandering stars were called Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn which were later discovered to be planets and not Stars.
