CHAPTER 4: The Early Days: A Confidant in Love
When he told me about Nica, I felt a wave of emotions—surprise, a flicker of disappointment, and then something I didn’t expect, appreciation. Appreciation for their relationship, for the honesty he had shown me, and for the space he had allowed me to occupy in his life.
It was then our bond shifted. He began to open up to me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a friend; I was his confidant, his go-to for advice on relationships. The irony wasn’t lost on me. Here I was, helping him navigate his love for someone else, while a quiet part of me wished for something different.
But I loved it.
He’d ask me about gifts—what girls truly appreciate, how to surprise someone, how to make them feel special. I found myself explaining the little things that mattered: a thoughtful note, a favorite snack, a song that speaks volumes without saying much.
He’d ask about love—how to keep it alive, how to listen, how to show up for someone even on the hard days. And I’d tell him everything I knew, hoping that my words would help him express his heart better.
It felt bittersweet, like holding a beautiful flower that wasn’t mine to keep. But I didn’t mind.
I’m the type of person who believes in love. Seeing others love each other the way they deserve fills me with a kind of joy I can’t explain. Helping him express that love, making sure he showed up for her in the best ways—it made me happy.
And so, our friendship grew. It grew in shared stories, in late-night chats filled with questions about life and love, and in the quiet moments where words weren’t necessary.
I didn’t know where this path would lead us, but one thing was clear, I cherished this connection, even if it meant being the one cheering for his love story from the sidelines.
