What I Read: January 2024
2024 started with a bang for me. From home maintenance emergencies to unexpected dental procedures, it was a month of great transformation, and also of great stress. Managing stress has always been difficult for me, but as I enter my thirties I am learning different ways to cope with the stresses in life that are inevitable, instead of simply ignoring them the way I did in my twenties. Rachel Reviews: A Paper Orchestra by Michael Jamin
Michael Jamin's collection of personal essays is a tour of his life in many ways, which has elements of memoir in its self-examination but is also full of humour throughout. In some ways, it reads like a performance so I wasn't surprised when I got to the end and discovered that Jamin is actually doing a talkback to coincide with this book: my impression was apt. As someone whose occupation is screenwriter, it perhaps is not surprising that there is awareness of theatricality present.

What Happened With The US troops
2020 saw President Trump take out General Sulaman in a strategic strike. The Iranians were sent a message to not escalate and it worked. So, my anticipation is a strike on a specific target in Iran, not necessarily on Iranian territory. The goal is to send a strong message without starting a war. President Biden wants to create deterrence without escalating into a regional battle. We're close to potential peace in the Middle East, so the last thing he wants is to blow up another front. These proxy groups have a lot to gain by attacking the US base. Iran denies involvement beyond financing them. The small proxy groups like to diminish US prestige in the region without going to war. Iran is happy to see the US pushed out of Iraq and Syria. By attacking the US, these groups gain status and prestige. Iran's involvement goes beyond financing, it provides inspiration.

The True Tragedy of Mr Wickham
In Pride and Prejudice, Mr Wickham's story genuinely is a tragic one, but it's a tragedy of his own making. George Wickham had every advantage in life, far above his station. Honestly, he was given significantly above even what might be expected to be given to the godchild of a gentleman. All he had to do, in order to be set for life, was put in a bit of hard work, and then avoid running up debts beyond his income.
