Paul's Happy Little Accident
A Review, with a Nod to the Late, Great Bob Ross

As a Bob Ross fan from long ago, I've always had a great appreciation for his concept of “happy little accidents,” in painting and in life. So, when I decided to write this review of Paul Stewart's poetry collection, The Accidental Poet, I couldn't help but borrow the phrase.
I've been a follower of Paul's work on Vocal for some time. In fact, we've become friends, if I may be so bold, and exchanging banter in the comments on each other's stories and poetry has become a regular “thing”. I was one of the first in line to grab myself a copy when his book was published. I left my review on Amazon and Good Reads, of course, but neglected to write one for Vocal. I'm happy to remedy that today.
Paul's “accidental” reference in the title is personal, and you'll discover it in his piece, “Poetry Found Me”. Here's a little teaser:
“This wasn't supposed to happen
This wasn't part of the plan
Somehow though...
Poetry found me”
From my perspective as a reader, Paul's foray into poetry was a happy little accident for me and other poetry lovers. This collection is a mix of equal parts fun, romance, wit and wonder, with a side of stuff that makes you say, “Whaaaat?”
You'll find a good dose of brogue here and there, and it pops up in some interesting places, like “Tektal's Around the World Drinking Session!”:
“Yer an alien, is tha' right, pal?
Did yee say yer name wis, Tektal?”
Be prepared to delve into some dark places, like struggles with addiction and its effect on loved ones. His frank, honest approach to such a sensitive subject deserves the utmost respect. And speaking of loved ones, you'll find some beautiful words written to his lovely wife. If you're interested in adding a few new words to your vocabulary, there's ample opportunity within these pages. Some are explained within the context, and some you'll just have to look up.
There are many inspirational pieces, of course and they don't disappoint. There are also some that will leave you with the need to take a a deep breath and consider what you've just read. Some are simply clever and lighthearted. The contents are free verse heavy, but there's nothing cumbersome or boring about any of what you'll discover in this collection.
There's a bit of self deprecation scattered among the pages, and I find that much preferable to pomposity. This isn't a book that screams, “Hey, look at my amazing poetry!” It's a look into the mind and heart of a talented “Scotalian” (©me) with a love for the written word, humbly presented for our enjoyment. Now, I can't say, of course, that it won't go to his head one day, but I'll be doing my best to keep his ego in check with my comments. I expect no less in return.
The bottom line is that I'm proud to have this collection on my shelf. I have no doubt that this (relative) youngster is going places and I look forward to saying, “I knew him when.” However, this wouldn't be an honest review if I didn't pick on something, so just let me say:
“Jeez, pal, where's the TOC? Where are the page numbers? I've worn the book out flipping back and forth for this review! Yeah, I know, it's not a short story collection and TOCs are hard, but if an old guy like me can manage it...”
Seriously, kids, get yourself a copy of “The Accidental Poet” for your own bookshelf. You won't regret it. Here's a link:

Reviewer's Note: I have another book review for a Vocal author and friend that's even more overdue and I'll be hoping to get that one done soon. I've also heard from a mutual friend to watch for another review of Pau'ls book, so...

Not only does he produce stuff that is fun, funny, thoughtful, clever, etc... but I am convinced I can't be the only person he has inspired to write as well. "Paul only writes poetry by accident, so if my pen slips and a wanky poem falls out, if it reveals a bit too much of me, if it sounds silly, or a bit pompous, or whatever... maybe that's OK. Maybe it's OK to just use it to express and see how it shakes out." So yeah... blame Paul 😂
Paul never disappoints, and neither does this review! Excellent work Dana!
I enjoyed the use of the Bob Ross line. Yes Paul is a gifted poet and interesting character on Vocal, one who I am happy to have ben following for a while now. Bravo for giving a shout out to him.

Wonderful review <3
Love this Dana, a well written and cheeky review!! Just the thing to summarize Paul and his book!
Hahaha. That damn TOC omission will haunt me, and with the next book, the Vocal book and anything else, you can be assured there will be at least some kind of helpful guide. All that aside, thank you, sir. I was excited to hear that you were going to write a review on Vocal for my first foray into self-publication (or any publication) All I can say is thank you and this should be a Top Story for both our sakes. Also, Scotalian. has a nice ring to it. Thank you. See. All I can say is thank you. and now I am intrigued by the other review coming soon...damn you...all secretive. Anyway, thank you. I said thank you a lot. And that's cos. Also. Love Bob Ross so really appreciate the nod to the master of calm and watercolour genius.
