Incredibooks: Pen Pal

A review of the story “Pen Pal” by JT Geissinger

By Joe PattersonPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

If you want a story that talks about how love transcends life and the great beyond then PenPal is the story for you. Written by J.T. Geissinger, PenPal is the story of a young woman named Kayla who is trying to piece her life back together following the supposed drowning death of her husband. As her journey to rediscovery begins Kayla finds herself writing to a mysterious person who is imprisoned through which she confides in a lot.

Romantic interest also finds its way back into Kayla’s life in the form of a man named Aidan, whom she has hired to do some housework remodeling. The more time she spends with Aidan and his acquaintances, the more Kayla finds herself falling in love with him. Though Aidan presents himself to be abrasive and off putting at times, he definitely woos the stonewalling Kayla. Due to having just lost her husband, Kayla is very reluctant to engage in a stabile relationship with Aidan.

The quirky pair start off as nothing more than friends with benefits, but soon enough this becomes too little for the adamant Aidan to bear. Before long Kayla and Aidan’s story takes an unprecedented supernatural twist. Kayla soon finds herself being contacted by the spirit world beyond the living and surely does this twist bring her story full circle. I say again that if you’re looking for a graphic love story with a supernatural twist then this story is for you.

One of the best things about all the characters in this story is they are all like onions. Most of them seem like open books when they’re first introduced, but as the story continues you come to find that everyone is not what they present themselves to be. It’s like everyone has a different angle they’re working, except for the main protagonist Kayla.

Author J.T. Geissinger does a great job at setting up a story that is centered around the choices of the characters, but the will at heart that compelled them to make these choices. If someone were to ask me I would say in a heartbeat that this story reminds me of the movie The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan. There is so much taking place between the living and the dead, but the most important details are hiding in plain sight and if you don’t pay close enough attention you’ll miss it.

I also liken this story to some of the sequel entries of the Hellraiser movie series due to how the story bounces back and forth between the living and the dead. Just like in what was the 5th and 6th Hellraiser film entries, PenPal shows the main character trying to piece their lives back together among the living while the answer to doing such lies within the dead. Penpal’s usage of the living helping the dead was also used in these Hellraiser entries.

I certainly missed some things but it made it more enjoyable to rehash once the twist ending was revealed, an ending that also likens to The Sixth Sense. As I read along this story really captivated me with its healthy sense of mystery. Though I thought I had full awareness of what was happening in the story, I really didn’t. This didn’t frustrate me, but it did leave me more intrigued.

This story is also an emotional rollercoaster, so if you’re into getting the feels for a story that will tug at the tears then this story is definitely for you. Before I read this story I didn’t know anything about the author J.T Geissinger, but after reading it I definitely wanna know more if Geissinger’s stories. So if you’re a romantic fantasy fan go give Penpals a read. You certainly won’t be disappointed.
