Fourth Wing Destroyed Me
An honest review of The Empyrean Series *spoiler free*
“I am the sky and the power of every storm that has ever been. I am infinite.”
― Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing
I have a new obsession- and that is Basgiath
I am sorry I have been kind of absent on Vocal. If you have been wondering why- well, this is why.
I fell in love with Rebecca Yarros and her writing style. I haven't read a fantasy novel or series for that matter, that has griped me so tightly in such a long time. I felt like I was 12 years old again reading past my bedtime with how quickly I inhaled these novels. In the span of two weeks, I changed my life. And now, I have to wait 2+ years for another book and I'm not gonna lie guys, I am absolutely crushed. I have the worst book-hangover that I have ever experienced.
So what is "Fourth Wing"?
Fourth Wing is the beginning novel of a five part book series about a fantasy war college with dragon riders. It falls under the romatasy category of fantasy as it is also got a lot of romance and just a smidge of spice.
What is Romantasy?
It is a new term for romantic fantasy novels.
There are currently three released books in the five part series currently out right now.
- Fourth Wing (540 pages)
- Iron Flame (623 pages)
- Onyx Storm (527 pages)
My PERSONAL favourite of the series so far, was Iron Flame. It was information heavy and I definitely will re-read it again before the release of Book #4. I'm currently listening to the Fourth Wing Audiobook on Spotify Premium... because I don't have an addiction to this series at all.... Alright who am I kidding, I am utterly ObSeSsEd with Rebecca Yarros now. Also why have I never listened to a dramatized audiobook before? That just honestly made the series that more appealing to me.
I have included a description of the first book down below.
Fourth Wing Description
Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders...
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
Description taken from GoodReads
I finished all three novels in two weeks give or take. Which is quite an accomplishment considering the Amanda Hocking book that I read back in January, took me almost a month to finish. It was only three hundred and some pages. Meanwhile the first three books in this five part series, had a total of 1712 pages combined. I still can't believe how fast I read these books and now all I can do is talk about The Empyrean series.
BUT NOW......
I'm addicted and all fans of this series have to wait......
ALMOST TWO YEARS FOR THE NEXT BOOK TO COME OUT.
Like I said, WORST BOOK-HANGOVER EVER!!!
But uh, I still highly recommend this series to anyone that loves fantasy novels. Even if it momentarily destroyed my life for a few days.
Rebecca Yarros is THE Queen of Cliffhangers in my mind. (Even though I haven't read any of her other work I know she did all the fans dirty by leaving Onyx Storm end the way it did.) I need answers now Rebecca.
Oh and also....
THEY HAVE DECIDED TO TURN THE EMPYREAN INTO A TELEVISION SERIES!!!!!
Can you feel my excitement through the screen?
Details to be announced but I am literally so excited. The way that this series became one of my absolute favourite book series to exist was not cool okay?
I loved her writing style so much, that I also bought The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros, but I still haven't had the courage to start it because I'm still reeling from the last whirlwind she put me through. I also am more of a fantasy girlie than a romance novel girlie. Hence, this post. I decided to write about the book series because they truly have fixed the slump that I found myself in lately.
So my questions for you:
- Have you heard of Fourth Wing?
- Have you read any of the books?
- Which was your favourite?
- What is your favourite quote from the series so far?
