Essential Postpartum Care for New Moms
Physical Healing After Birth–What Every New Mom Needs to Know

It felt like a war zone only a moment ago. The microcosmic thrill of witnessing life in its entirety was full of challenges and hardships too; the past seems overwhelming. Yes, that perspective that Maya had, which was and still is her new world. It has been challenging throughout due to all the ticking emotions of the fact that her daughter, who is Lilly, is right in front of her.
Miraculously, Lily is alive and functioning normally. However, the mechanical motherly feeling that Maya has associated with her breastfeeding suddenly hurts. Even more so is the discomforting sensation on her abdomen, which like a hangover always ached. However, all the concerns arising were due to the overly mentioned childbirth for so long in all her classes. And the sobering truth was that all the other things that were told in those classes sounded easier to hear.
Constipation became a major issue, and many believed that it was the signal that she was ready to go into labor. In her quest to find more relatable examples of women's experiences, Maya started searching for women's health topics online. However, it was peculiar that Lilly seemed to defy all the concerns that Brenda and the instructors had anticipated. The conversations mainly centered on her body shape, and I found myself appreciating her physique instead of focusing on self-care as a more expansive concept.
Maya took an interest and explored more. She started understanding the role of severe rest, the wonders of perineum care, and, to her surprise, the role of nutrition in her recovery process. She learned that her body was not only healing after giving birth but that there was an incredible metamorphosis, both physical and emotional, taking place.
Equipped with this information, Maya decided it was time to take care of herself. She started going for slow-paced walks, gentle breathing exercises, and eating healthy food. Little by little, her body started to heal. Pain was getting less and less, her energy kept increasing, and she felt more and more like herself.
Maya now sees postpartum care differently because it is more than just a physical aspect. It was regaining the sense of self, rediscovering one’s body, and undergoing the transformation that comes along with being a mother. It was an exploration of immense value, which can be likened to the revolution of the spirit.
