Declutter for Success

How an Organized Workplace Benefits All

A Decluttered Workspace

When it comes to organization, Sarah's office proved the complete opposite. Her office radiated with the scent of defeat, and an even worse aroma - that of cold, stale coffee. Papers remained on every table and desk in the office, contributing to chaotically cluttered spaces. Once, her desk used to stand as a testament to the work she accomplished. Now it was a showpiece of every lost task, misplaced documents, and chaos. Sarah would walk to the office and immediately feel the dread, expecting a far greater challenge than she could handle. The tasks were low life on a hierarchy of challenging tasks; the sight of her desk never failed to stress her out.

The hunt for the essential things in the office became a challenge within itself. Irrelevant printouts completely overshadowed vital emails. Competitively tight deadlines came closer, all while Sarah's brain froze with the sight of endless clutter. Her frustration with the situation began building more and more, thus impacting her productivity at work negatively. In the beginning, other employees would seek opportunities to work alongside her as a colleague; slowly, it became common for them to stick to their cubicles. Cries turned into secrets, fear of being bullied became the new team norm, and all that went unspoken was avoided.

Finally, there came a day when everything pissed Sarah off. One utterly crucial file of her client eluded her the whole day, and finally, when she managed to find it, she was startled to find it stuffed in an unkempt pile of old newspapers. The hour was late, yet the tears rolling down her eyes did not seem to make sense. Declaring an end, she said, ‘Enough!’ whilst getting up half from her chair.

After that intense meeting, Sarah realized she needed to take the lead. She rearranged her workspace by getting rid of all the clutter on her working table and throwing away papers that weren’t important while also coming up with an effective archive system. The change was apparent. The next day, Sarah arrived at her job feeling completely different, focused, and composed. What once used to add stress for her, her working desk now, on the other hand, had order and great flow.

The difference was quite great. There was a dramatic increase in Sarah’s output. She used to waste a lot less time locating the files since she was organized and was able to use her time wisely. It did not take long for her co-workers to notice the change and begin to approach her with questions and requests to work together. As the team’s spirit improved, so did the energy level within the office walls.

Sarah realized that maintaining a clean working area was not just about aesthetics, but also about creating an environment conducive to success. She had gotten to a different stage of great productivity and creativity by removing unnecessary items and simplifying her processes.
