Audiobook Review: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
The first book of the Locked Tomb trilogy, narrated by Moira Quirk

The Emperor needs necromancers.
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
Of course, some things are better left dead.

Review
According to this book's many reviews, this is one of those stories you'll either love or hate. Like many readers, "lesbian necromancers in space" drew me in, and I enjoyed the ride. Yes, the book is very long. I honestly would've stopped by around the 40% mark if I wasn't doing the audiobook version because it seemed to take forever to get to the meat of the trials (and I didn't even really understand some of the necromancy concepts). But the thing is, I loved the narrator — mad props to Moira Quirk! I've read complaints about the dialogue, yet I didn't even really notice how cringe or teenager-y it was with how entertained I was by the narration. Oh the banter and the sarcasm! I definitely had some laughs while doing the dishes and cooking.
I'm still interested to read the sequels, but only if I can also get them on audio. And I'm not really racing to start, either. It seems to be a very big universe (to the point that I needed the wiki to keep up) and while I actually like that (I'm a Star Wars Expanded Universe girlie) I can read plenty other books in the meantime.
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you fancy a short read, I have a cozy reimagining of the Norse myths about Hel, but it's just under 70 pages and can be read in one sitting. ✨ Plus there's a swag kit coming soon! Includes a "membership card," a bookmark, a sticker, an origami dog, and an exclusive 500-word story 🫶🏼

All things end, and all must die.
But death is not always the end.
When Geiravor Lokisdottir was stripped of her name and cast out of Asgard, torn from her family and the life she had known, she thought she’d lost it all. But in the shadows of Niflheim she discovers the path to her destiny, and what it truly means to be queen.
This is a prequel short story to THE PROPHECIES OF RAGNAROK trilogy by Meri Benson and Marie Sinadjan, and a retelling of the myths involving Hel, the Norse goddess of death and the queen of the underworld.
