Why Don't You Try Me Tonight?
A Plagiaristic Poem and Playlist of Songs By Ry Cooder

Introduction
I picked up a vinyl copy of this album and thought some of the titles read like poetry. There are thirteen songs which, because of the length of one gives me fourteen lines, enough for a sonnet.
Ry Cooder is best known for his guitar work, and various polls have rated him very highly:
This album is a best of, but his "Bop Til You Drop" was, I believe, the first rock album to be recorded digitally although it was pre MP3 and CD.
Both albums are in my collection on vinyl and CD.
Many of the songs on here are traditional or covers, but he is also a composer in his own right.

The Playlist
This is in no particular order and does not list all the songs listed in the Plagiaristic Poem.
"Little Sister"
A beautiful gentler take on the Elvis Presley classic. I like both versions, but this shades it for me. Absolutely gorgeous.
"Little Sister" was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It was originally released as a single in 1961 by American singer Elvis Presley, who enjoyed a No. 5 hit with it on the Billboard Hot 100.
The single (as a double A-side with "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame") also reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart.
"634-5789"
"634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)" is a soul song written by Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper. It was first recorded by Wilson Pickett on December 20, 1965 and included on his 1966 Atlantic Records album The Exciting Wilson Pickett with backing vocals by Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles. The single reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart and number 13 on the Hot 100 singles chart.
Ry didn't include the subtitle on his version but this is a gorgeous life-affirming slice of soul that connects with "Why Don't You Try Me" as well.
"How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?"
This is perfect Ry Cooder territory and has been covered by many artists before and since. Maybe this is the version that you have heard.
"How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?" is an American folk song originally recorded on December 4, 1929, in New York City. It was written, composed, and performed by Blind Alfred Reed, accompanying himself on the violin. The song tells of hard times during the Great Depression. It is considered an early example of a protest song. In 2020, the song was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame.
There was once a time when everything was cheap.
But now prices almost puts a man to sleep.
When we pay our grocery bill,
We just feel like making our will.
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?
"Why Don't You Try Me?"
The song Why Don't You Try Me was written by Billy Young and was first released by Maurice & Mac in 1968.
I prefer this title finished with the word "Tonight", just a beautiful song from a guy offering to look after a girl who has been treated wrong by her partner. This is the right way to conclude this wonderful playlist.
