So, I already had an entry for this challenge, and would have loved to have done something using my voice, etc., but I do not really have the resources or the budget for that. My first entry was solely the lyrics and structure, with lots of information about how I would have composed it if I had the time, resources, and skills.

So for my next couple of entries, I've opted for AI music generation. I am in two minds about it, as I value the creation of music organically by people, but as it is allowed for the basis of this challenge, I've been a bit lenient on my ideology. I told it I wanted it to be symphonic metal, post-hardcore, and no-wave. It mostly produced a post-hardcore/metalcore song, which is fine.

Here is the track in all its glory, followed by the lyrics.

Intro

Chant chant chant chant

decant the descent

Chant chant chant chant

descent by the cent

Verse One

When we first learn to count,

when we are so young, so naΓ―ve.

we learn to count in easy sets

we learn to count in easy sets

I started with so many, an arbitrary

number or value, heavy, with meaning

Chorus

But we are happy, if we are happy?

can we be happy? if we are destined to lose out on all that we gave, all that we were, when we're buried with the remains of our bodies or charred to ash, as the metal is removed and given to our loved ones to pour down a well, down a gutter straight to hell

Diversion (I actually meant this as a cue, rather than part of the words, but love that the AI included it)

argh, we live, we breathe, we die, we live, we count, we lie

Verse Two

I started with say, 100, that many?

As the time marched on, as life moved

on and up, I lost 10, not many?

Hurt myself, hurt others, lost 10

again, another and another 10

are you keeping count, keeping score?

Chorus

But we are happy, if we are happy?

can we be happy? if we are destined to lose out on all that we gave, all that we were, when we're buried with the remains of our bodies or charred to ash, as the metal is removed and given to our loved ones to pour down a well, down a gutter straight to hell

Bridge

Another 10 down the drain

another 10 felt the pain

another 10 Astro plane

saw the hurt in others caused

by others, selfishly, aimlessly

for greed, creed, propaganda

and more, 10 dropped, 10 left

I kept losing and losing

10 after 10 until

I had no fucks left to give

Final Chorus/Outro

But we are happy, if we are happy?

can we be happy? if we are destined to lose out on all that we gave, all that we were, when we're buried with the remains of our bodies or charred to ash, as the metal is removed and given to our loved ones to pour down a well, down a gutter straight to hell

10 after 10 until

I had no fucks left to give

I can relate to not having the resources for a full-on production. Using AI for music generation is interesting. You said you wanted symphonic metal, post-hardcore, and no-wave, but got a post-hardcore/metalcore song. Do you think the AI interpreted your request wrong? Or is it just hard to blend those genres precisely? Also, the lyrics seem thought-provoking. What inspired them?

I get your dilemma about using AI for music. It's tough to balance the organic creation we value. Your AI-generated track sounds interesting. How do you think the lack of hands-on composition affects the emotional connection in the music? I've always composed music the old - fashioned way. It makes me wonder how the AI interprets your symphonic metal and no - wave requests. Did it capture the essence at all?

Knowing your musical taste, I'm not shocked with the chosen genre for this!! My favourite line was "I had no fucks left to give" but that be just my general mood lately lol anyway, congrats on Top Story, Paul!!!!

Awesome song, my friend! Took a listen and read the other day but didn’t have time to comment. Def a lot of power and emotion in this. The whole lyric to AI thing is so interesting to meβ€” honestly I’m not much of a heavy metal person, but this was fun. This challenge is like a cool way to learn more about a different side of everyone :) Congrats on Top Story!

Great image for the title and the song!

  • You know, I went in really wanting to hate this (because fuck AI – signed all the creators it robs), but I can't hate it. It did a decent job. I do think it is an interesting illustration of AI's limits, though. The image generation has gotten decent. This song was decent. But when it came to following the lyrics, I found myself having to scroll along with the printed lyrics. For the most part, they could be understood, but every once in a while a word was skipped or lost for lack of being distinct against the melody. It's always in the fine details where AI breaks down. Even now, it still can't quite nail text in images. It still can't quite nail lyrics in songs. None of this is commentary on your entry, just where my mind went as I soaked in the full experience (song + printed lyrics). You certainly wrote a metal song, and without that, I doubt Suno would have been able to pull it off so well. So well done to you and the soulless machine

I couldn't create something like this, with or without AI 😬

YES!!! I was pleasantly surprised and pumped by the results. Definitely created a 'mood'. Nice entry, Paul!

What a great heavy metal piece. At times with the phrasing, it kind of reminded me of my favorite Billy Joel song 'We Didn't Start the Fire'.

  • Impressive effort! Despite containing a word forbidden to cross my lips, I am impressed with this and the AI generated music/song. It sounded the same as my adult son was playing just now as he washed the dishes!🀣He was impressed, especially with DIVERSION!πŸ™ƒπŸ‘πŸΌ

  • Interesting. Not my type of music, lol, but well conceived & constructed.

Your lyrics are good and meaningful. Let me listen to the song. Bahahah! I don’t listen to metal. But this was cool and peppy! And so very very you. Well done Paul! πŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ
