The Making of "You Give Me"

Introducing The Rick Henry Christopher Project

I want to be upfront about the recent songs I have been creating. They are all created with the assistance of an AI tool called Suno.

Suno, is a generative artificial intelligence music creation program designed to generate realistic songs that combine vocals and instrumentation, or are purely instrumental. The program operates by producing songs based on text prompts provided by users. Suno has been widely available since December 20, 2023, after the launch of a web application and a partnership with Microsoft, which included Suno as a plugin in Microsoft Copilot.

I write all the lyrics of these song creations. With my detailed prompts Suno AI is able to compose/generate melody to my specifications. I call myself a co-writer or co-creator of these songs.

I came up with the title The Rick Henry Christopher Project in order to clarify the difference between performer and creator. With these AI generated songs I am not a performer, I am a creator. Therefore this is my project.

A friend of mine recently told me, “Rick, you are more than just a creator. You are an AI artist. I jokingly responded, “Maybe, I’ll be the Beethoven of the AI era.”

As it is I am thoroughly enjoying creating these songs. What started out as a fun distraction from the hardships of my daily life has now turned into an opportunity.

A paid account with Suno gives you ownership of the songs you create. I can use these songs for any and all commercial purposes including distributing them to streaming sites. However, with the free Suno account you do not own the songs you create, Suno maintains the license and they own your creations. Of course I have a paid account. I tried Suno out for free for two full days and I was hooked so I paid for a Pro account. I do not own the rights to the first three songs I created with Suno, but I do own the rights to all the subsequent songs. I think at this point I have created in total about 35 songs.

Before moving on my friend Vicki Trusselli has also been creating AI tunes on Suno. You can visit her at: https://suno.com/@salsaingsoloists659

The Making of “You Give Me”

“You Give Me” is my 10th AI song overall. It's my third dance/disco song and my first song where I really got creative with the prompts.

Before I did anything I decided to do some research on the traits of a disco song. A few things I found were repetitive vocals, four on the floor beats, a fast tempo, and syncopated bass lines. With this in mind I was ready to write some prompts and some lyrics and put together a winning dance song.

I wanted the song to be an electronic song, “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer and “The Robots” by Kraftwerk were my role models. I researched the structure of each song.

I wanted the song to open with the word love repeated seven times.

But, I didn't want the vocal to be singing it as love. I wanted it to sound like luh-uv.

To achieve that sound, I knew I couldn't spell the word out as l o v e in the lyrics, so I said luh of over a few times until I figured out the spelling. I spelled it as “luh of”.

I went minimal on the lyrics as my two role models are minimal.

I came up with the word chicka chicka which is repeated about five times in rapid succession creating a great vocal sound effect and in some places it became this awesome electronic sound.

I also came up with a few more carefully manipulated words in order to create depth and multi-layers in the song.

This was the beginning of what is becoming one of my signature sounds. I hope you enjoy “You Give Me.”

Wonderful. So glad to read about how you are exploring the creative possibilities of generative systems and music. Also good to know about the level of artistic control you are able to exert. Thanks for sharing your findings to date and I hope the venture continues to go well.

I did feel a touch of Donna Summer in there. I may have to check out Suno. I'm no musician but can play the drums fairly well. Awesome work, Rick!
