The Happiest Unhappy Day
For some, the happiest unhappy day of the year comes around the same day every year, Valentines' Day. For some, the typical over-played-love-sick-songs are perfect on a day advertised for love. Some are destined for greatness and love. Some not so much. For some love is a profusion of open space. For some, a narrow tightrope in need of careful navigation. Some are just looking for some ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T’ as told by Aretha Franklin.

A Playlist for the Day That Must Not be Named
Love can be the worst thing to ever happen to you, and it can be the best. It can tear you open, leaving you bitter and hollow, but it can also make you feel on top of the world. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble. Personally, I’ve experienced both ends, which has left me feeling neutral about Valentine’s Day. I’m sort of a serial monogamist. It’s not by choice, well maybe a little, but I find myself falling for the bad boys way more than I should. It’s a problem. I know, but luckily, I’m a romantic at heart and continue to look for the right person no matter how bad past relationships may have been.

The Various Moods of Valentine's
To Valentine or not to Valentine, that is the question. This day's playlist is a delicate one. For some, Valentine's brings up golden memories of glitzy gifts and gorgeous getaways, for others it's a reminder that they haven't gotten flowers since that time in high school when a plastic rose cost less than lunch. In such polarising times as these music comes to the rescue.

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
So you're not a big fan of Valentine's Day? Me neither. To be totally honest, I think that Valentine's Day is just a made-up holiday aimed to get us to spend our money on products our partners don't even really need. Don't get me wrong, I love love. I just don't need a fictional holiday to prove it. I'd rather spoil my partner on a random day rather than a day where everyone is forced to remember to do so.

Burning of a Nose: An Anti-Valentines Day Playlist.
Lets wind the clock back to February 2013, the first time I was alone on Valentine's Day in 4 years. My relationship with my girlfriend ended the previous October. It feels weird to say, but I was actually kind of thank full for the time alone: no gifts to buy, no dinner to plan, and certainly no fucking Nicholas Sparks' film adaptations to watch.

Bye Bye Valentine
It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind romances that Valentine's Day (And the Hallmark Channel) want you to be ensnared in. It's also just as easy to be beyond that and frankly just despise the holiday. This is especially true if you're single. It's incredibly easy to watch all the happy couples going about doing their couple-y things and get jealous and angry. I have a bit of advice, though. Don't do that.

Valentine’s Gay
“Alexa. Play a love song.” “When a maaaaan, loves a womaaaaan....can’t keep his m...” “Alexa. Stop.” It’s 3am on February 13th and I’m scouring the internet for a Valentine’s card to give to my girlfriend of seventeen years. If you’ve never been a gay woman on the hunt for a romantic greetings card to give to another gay woman before, let me talk you through your options: There are vaginas. Everywhere. Some artfully drawn, others...not. Boobs, lots of boobs. The creative use of the word (?) ‘Lez’ is something to behold! Shout out to my personal favourite: “Lez Be An Couple”.

Love Hurts, Alternative Style.
I'm a terrible, hopelessly romantic woman. My favorite movie is Titanic, for gosh's sakes. Ever since I was a young teenager, I craved to have a romantic relationship with a guy. At a tender age, I developed painful crushes on celebrities. My first crush was on Micky Dolenz of The Monkees. I wrote endless love letters and poetry to him, praying for the day we would meet and profess our undying love for each other.
