Born to a French-Vietnamese mother and a German father, Toronto-based singer-songwriter Nathalie King brings a unique cultural background and a distinct voice to her music. Known for her sultry, smooth, low register reminiscent of the vintage jazz era, King has made a name for herself with a style rooted in cinematic electro-pop and trip-hop. Her sound delves deeply into themes of mental health and emotional experiences, offering listeners a raw and honest perspective through her lyrics and melodies.

Nathalie King is now set to release her six-track EP, PTSD, a powerful exploration of her own healing journey from childhood trauma. “I’ve been writing songs as a therapeutic means to overcome childhood trauma and depression throughout my life,” King shares. The EP was created in collaboration with Bristol-born producer Joseph Snook, who brought a distinctive electronic and UK-inspired sound to the project. Together, they’ve crafted a record that blends moody, atmospheric production with King’s soulful vocal delivery, resulting in an evocative collection of tracks that speak to her experiences and resilience.

The lead single, “Within a Dream,” dives deep into some of the most painful memories from King’s past, while also serving as a reflection on how far she’s come in her journey of self-healing and growth. The song captures the essence of her emotional turmoil, set against a haunting electronic backdrop that heightens the intensity of her storytelling. King does not shy away from confronting the darkest corners of her psyche, using her music as a canvas for processing the trauma she endured as a child.

“‘Within a Dream’ is about the many nights I spent in my bed as a child, sweating with fear and feeling a ton of anxiety,” King explains. “My parents would be fighting, or I’d just been beaten and screamed at for something trivial. The song revisits that profound anxiety I felt in my stomach, the sorrow as I cried myself to sleep countless times.” Through her lyrics, King revisits the visceral sensations of those nights, painting a vivid picture of a young girl trapped in a cycle of fear and sadness, unable to find comfort or safety. The song becomes a window into the beginning of her experience with generational trauma, a theme that recurs throughout the EP.

The EP PTSD is more than just a collection of songs; it is a sonic narrative that traces King’s evolution from a child bearing the weight of familial dysfunction to an adult who has done the hard work of confronting her past. The production choices throughout the EP reflect this emotional arc, moving from dark, brooding soundscapes to lighter, more hopeful tones as the tracks progress. Joseph Snook’s influence is evident, as he infuses the songs with a distinctive UK sound that blends elements of trip-hop and electronic music, giving the EP a contemporary edge while staying true to King’s introspective style.

For King, the process of writing and recording PTSD has been a transformative experience. “Creating this EP allowed me to process memories I’d buried for a long time,” she says. “It was painful, but also cathartic. Each song became a step forward in my healing.” By facing her trauma head-on, she has been able to translate her pain into something powerful and relatable. Her vulnerability throughout the record is palpable, and it’s this openness that draws listeners in, making them feel seen and understood.

As she releases PTSD, Nathalie King hopes her music can be a source of comfort and connection for those who have experienced similar struggles. “I know I’m not the only one who’s gone through this kind of pain,” she reflects. “If my music can help even one person feel less alone, then I’ve done what I set out to do.” Her EP is not just an artistic expression; it’s an act of reaching out, a bridge built on shared experiences and the desire to heal.

With this release, Nathalie King solidifies her place as a compelling voice in the realm of alternative pop, combining her unique vocal style with deeply personal storytelling and innovative production. PTSD stands as a courageous musical statement, marking the culmination of years of self-work and artistic growth.
