Mohawk Alt-Pop Artist/Producer Semiah Drops Charlie’s Angels-Esque “Withdrawals” Music Video
.... with a Warrior Punk Anime Edge
In an industry where fleeting digital fame often eclipses genuine artistry, Semiah stands as a refreshingly authentic talent, blending skill, charisma, and a strong connection to her roots. At just 25 years old, Semiah already has two decades of stage experience, making her as comfortable in front of a crowd as she is chopping firewood in the mountains or dancing in urban glam on a club floor. Her performances are a rare spectacle, often met with standing ovations and fervent encores, showcasing her ability to seamlessly transition from intimate solo club shows to grand concert stages with full dancers and live bands.
Semiah’s unique presence is impossible to ignore. She has the poise of a seasoned performer and the raw energy of a flirty dervish, captivating audiences with her quick wit, storytelling prowess, and a disarming smile. But there's more to her than just the playful "cowgrrl" exterior – underneath lies a depth of spirituality and introspection far beyond her years. Her artistry blends her cultural heritage, modern pop sensibilities, and an unpretentious love for both the natural world and high-energy city life.
Her latest single, “Withdrawals,” marks a daring evolution in her sound, blending electro pop-punk with an innovative twist. Co-produced with Montreal-based collaborator Teleh0rn, the track explores the raw emotional turmoil of a love gone wrong. What sets “Withdrawals” apart is its sonic texture; Semiah interweaves traditional Haudenosaunee vocal techniques with metallic production elements, giving the song a sharp, almost industrial edge. This juxtaposition of modern pop production with ancient vocal traditions creates a sound that is entirely her own – something you might hear pulsing through both underground clubs and expansive, snow-covered landscapes.
Accompanying the single is a striking music video that blends cinematic storytelling with high-octane choreography. Semiah not only stars in the video but also produced, directed, co-choreographed, co-edited, and created the wardrobe, underscoring her multifaceted talent. The video features a thrilling katana sword fight, interspersed with scenes of glittering characters emerging from snowy mountain peaks like an Indigenous Charlie’s Angels team. This warrior punk anime aesthetic reflects her ability to seamlessly blend her cultural roots with a contemporary, rebellious edge.
In the video, Semiah leads a femme fatale trio, including Katie Couchie as the Purple Spy and Kali Kennedy as the Blue Spy, who join her on a mission to hunt down a mysterious Villain, played by Montana Summers. Without revealing too much, Semiah hints that the Villain’s character symbolizes the story behind “Withdrawals,” drawing on her own experiences with heartbreak but told through a Hollywood-inspired narrative lens.
“I wanted to write a story that has the same moral lesson as my breakup but in a way that's more universal and entertaining,” Semiah explains. “It’s a narrative that isn’t as personal because I still feel vulnerable sharing too much of my own life directly through my art. Instead, I crafted a plot where there’s chemistry between my character and the Villain, reflecting the lingering feelings from my real-life relationship. Throughout the video, I have multiple opportunities to defeat the Villain, but I hesitate each time. There’s still that emotional connection, that unresolved tension.”
The final moments of the music video leave viewers on a tantalizing cliffhanger. The showdown between Semiah’s lead spy and the Villain escalates into a standstill, leaving the audience guessing about the outcome. “We end up in this moment where it’s unclear who will make the next move,” she says. “Does one of us die? Do we reconcile? It’s left open-ended, and I wanted it that way because in real life, those moments of uncertainty are often where the most emotion lies.”
The video for “Withdrawals” serves as just a taste of a much larger storyline that Semiah plans to develop into a full feature film. Her vision extends beyond music, combining her love for visual storytelling, dance, and fashion into an immersive experience. For Semiah, this project is not just about releasing a song – it’s about building a world that reflects her eclectic, boundary-pushing style and her commitment to sharing stories that resonate on a deeply emotional level.
As an artist, Semiah is forging a path that is uniquely her own. Whether she’s dancing under city lights or standing in the crisp mountain air, she brings a grounded authenticity to everything she does. In a world full of disposable hits, Semiah is here for the long haul, crafting music and stories that leave a lasting impression.
