Soft rock is also referred to as light rock. This type of music originated in the late 1960s in Southern California and the UK. In this series are some of the best soft rock songs to come out over the years. The link to the first part is below.
“Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” is a song that was written by English singer Elton John and songwriter Bernie Taupin. It was recorded by Elton John and is featured on his 1974 album Caribou. Released as a single the song charted on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles charts. It was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1974. The song went to number one in Canada and became John’s fifth chart-topper in that country.
“Fields of Gold” is a song that was written and recorded by English singer and songwriter Sting. It is featured on his 1993 album Ten Summoner’s Tales. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles charts.
“Fire and Rain” is a song that was written and recorded by American singer and songwriter James Taylor. It was released as the second single from his 1970 album Sweet Baby James. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is listed on Rolling Stone magazine’s list at number 227 of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
“How Long” is the debut single recorded by the English band Ace. It is featured on their 1974 album Five-A-Side. The song charted on both the Billboard 100 and UK Singles charts. In 2020 – 45 years after it was first released the song was used for an advertisement for Amazon Prime. At this time it returned to the charts and went to number one on the Billboard Rock Digital Song Sales chart.
“How Deep Is Your Love” is a pop ballad that was written and recorded by the English group The Bee Gees. It was released as a single in 1977 and is featured in the soundtrack to the movie “Saturday Night Fever”. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts as well as reaching number one on the UK Singles chart. It is at number 375 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
“I Want to Know What Love Is” is a power ballad recorded by the British-American rock band Foreigner. It was released in 1984 and is on their album Agent Provocateur. The song went to number one in both the US and the UK and became the group’s biggest hit. The song charted again in the Top 25 in 2000, 2001, and 2002 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Recurrents chart. It is at number 476 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
“I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” is a song that was written by Parker McGee and recorded by England Dan & John Ford Coley. It is featured on their 1976 album Nights Are Forever. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart. It also charted on the UK Singles chart. England Dan or Dan Seals half of the duo re-recorded the song in 1995 in an acoustic country music style for the album In a Quiet Room.
“Keep On Loving You” is a ballad that was written by Kevin Cronin and recorded by the American rock band REO Speedwagon. The song is featured on their 1980 album Hi Infidelity. It was the band’s first single to break the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went to number one in 1981. It also charted on the UK Singles chart. In the US it was certified Platinum by the RIAA. The song has been a mainstay on 1980s soft rock compilations.
