The song is a staple of the band's live shows and was the namesake of the 1996 live album Rockin' Down the Highway.
“Carefree Highway” is a son that was recorded and written by the Canadian singer and songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. It is featured on his 1974 album Sundown and was released as the second single. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart. The title of the song comes from a section of Arizona State Route 74 in north Phoenix where Lightfoot saw a sign for the town of Carefree.

It is the last album to feature lead singer Bon Scott who died in 1980. After his death this song suddenly became a representation of his life up to mortem and the carefree attitude with his life style. It is a physical manifestation of everything the singer stood for. It is interesting that he actually sang on this album before fate stepped in.
